Yes they do.

as a taxpayer, this is the kind of thing that angers me...not that medicaid covers WLS but that people like me--who work in State government--have insurance plans that do NOT cover WLS...so I am working for the government and don't have coverage...but my taxes that I pay as a worker are being used to cover WLS for those who aren't contributing taxes...unfair to the max

If you think that's bad, I'm a nurse working in a county hospital district that pays our salary by taxing individuals who live in that county. I happen to live in the same county, so every year when I pay property tax, I'm helping to pay my salary. Life isn't fair.

I live in Houston' date=' too. Are you in the medical profession? If not, the look for companies that provide insurance with companies that do cover it. I know that United Health Care and Cigna do, if you jump through hoops and stand on your head while twirling a baton.....maybe other members here know of other insurance companies that cover it. I looked into Medicare/Medicaid and if I remember right, they cover bypass but not the sleeve.

Also since you live in Cypress, don't forget about all the hospitals on the West side of Houston, like the one at I-10 & Barker Cypress.

Good luck dear - I've been in those shoes and IT AIN'T FUN!!!! But it WILL be okay.[/quote']

I have united healthcare and they do Not cover it . It depends on your plan they are not all the same

I worked for UT Health Systems in Dallas and they covered WLS but only after a long drawn out process. They would not approve me because my BMI was only 38 and my 2 comorbidities were controlled. I lost my job with them in Sept 2011, got a job in California and moved in Oct 2011. I was sleeved on 9/10/12 This job paid for 100% after I paid $3000 out of pocket. Everything has a reason. It is God's plan - not yours.

So sorry to hear about your job loss. People have given you great advice - and it sounds like you already have begun a great connections in the Houston network! Be sure to create a LinkedIn account and get your profile to 100%. Also join some of the groups on LinkedIn that relate to healthcare, hospitals, houston employment, ahima, ama, etc. Also connect with your community college. Their career services office should be free for you and will offer you great support.

I have been laid off three times and each time I have actually transitioned to a better job. I know this was a shock, and while you may be happy to get out of that company, it's a shaky, unexpected time for you. Not at all what you planned on. It's so important you get some support right now - and that you use this time to take care of yourself, apply for unemployment, think through what you might like to do next, and have faith that God is good and may just have something BETTER for you right around the corner. Message me directly if I can support you in any way.

My husband lost his job. We never asked for any kind of help. I figured we payed in enough taxes. Still do. No longer need it but was thankful in a time of need. It was a once in a life time opportunity so I took it. I completly understand where your coming from. I didnt say I agreed with the system.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
