I think this is a personal decision that you have to make for yourself. You will hear "don't you dare" or "sure, I do".

For myself, I'm going to follow on the heals of others success and the advice that my surgeon has given me, I've chosen not to. I enjoy the Smart Water brand and crystal light so much that I don't even look at soda anymore.

Good luck on your upcoming journey!

Most surgeons will tell you carbonation stretches the sleeve. Then we have people here that have had their surgeon say it doesn't. I choose not to drink it because I don't like diet anymore, and regular soda is too fattening. I don't like the chemicals they put in diet soda.

I only drink things with stevia now because after reading about artificial sweeteners, it's not anything I want in my body.

Personally, I choose not to drink anything with artificial sweeteners in it. I know that once I take a drink of it, I will be totally addicted to it again. I tend to just drink diet soda when having it. No Water, no juices, just the diet soda. So I won't even touch it. :)

I have read that it stretches the stomach but my dr only expressed major concern about it burning a whole in the stomach. And that went for any soda... I'm a huge diet coke drinker and have now gone two weeks with out it. I'm still pre op but I don't want it to be an issue after so I decided to quit now. I think it's up to you what you do as is any of the changes needed for this to be successful... I just figured I sure as heck don't want a whole in my stomach and of I'm going to o so far as to have surgery to help loose weight then I'm going to take as many steps as I can to prevent regain... And for me soda was part of that...

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
