The Psychological Battle - 2 Weeks Post Op

Recommended Posts

Had my surgery 2 weeks ago with Dr Almanza and feeling pretty good. I've already lost almost 21 lbs! However a lot of that was Water weight for sure. Stil feeling great when I step on the scale though :) I know this is only the beginning and I'm excited for the future. Having some minor problems with acid reflux but nothing major. It's the psychological battle as it pertains to my previous relationship with food and my 'food habits' that I'm dealing with now. I don't feel hungry at all but it's the simple things like coming home from work cooking a big unhealthy (but yummy) meal and sitting down eating all my comfort food that made me feel good and was the relaxing part of my day that I miss. Learning new healthy habits will be a work in progress for awhile but feel it will not only benefit me but my whole family as well. Interested in hearing from anyone further out post op than me to share 'what comes next' or what I can expect going forward. Thx

I know how you feel. I definitely went through a mourning period with food, and I still do at times. Food was such a source of comfort for me, even though we had a love/hate relationship. Occasionally I still make 'not so great' choices... However, it does get better. I am 3 months out. I don't miss food nearly as much as I used to. Eventually food will lose it's power over you. Once you start seeing the weight coming off steadily, you will be so happy that you won't want to do anything to jeopardize that. And even if you do mess up, which you will at some point, just remember that it's nowhere near as bad as it would have been without your new sleeve. It's also easy to jump right back on track. You have an amazing support group here, be sure to frequent the forum.

food is a tough mistress to tame, that's for sure. I'm a firm believer in getting some help to deal with the mental part of this journey. Seeing a therapist has helped me deal with my food issues and I'm not ashamed to admit it.

Good luck on your journey!! :)

I agree with Lissa, I see the therapist that did my initial evulation. I have seen her weekly since that first time. I am one month out today and I have lost 22 pounds, but the scale has not moved in several days and I have been exercising everyday. A good book is breaking free from emotional eating, I really identified with the author and have put to use some of her coping suggestions. Its hard, no one said it would be easy, but I hope with time it gets easier.

The first two weeks are the worst. I think it is because we CAN'T eat. We feel deprived. But I am in my third week and eating almost everything I want and I am satisfied with that. I promise it gets easier once you can eat REAL food.

BTW my scale hasn't moved in two weeks. I'm just waiting for the BIG LOSS....It's coming soon I HOPE!!!

Even though we have this wonderful tool there are times where I forget and try to eat like before. But I can't, thanks to my sleeve. I do really good if I use my dessert size plates, but if I use a salad plate, I put too much on there and then I try to eat it when on automatic pilot. LOL. I'm still working on throwing food out when I'm food. I hate my old core habit of eating everything on my plate. If I'm really really hungry, I put too much on my plate. :( So at 10 months out, I'm still learning not to do that. :)

I lost 15 lbs preop and then 14 lbs the first week and that's it. Nothing since.....I actually gained 2 lbs

I don't know how it's possible I don't eat more than 600 calories a day. But they say it happens. So I'm just going with the flow and hope the scale moves soon.

Thank you to everyone who has responded. I may pick up that book NCsleever63 suggested and/or seek out some therapy. When you undergo a WLS in the city I live they require pre-op counseling, however, since I went to Mexico none of this part of the journey was ever discussed. Takes time to form new habits which I'm ok with. Think I was so focused on researching and getting the surgery itself, I failed to think about what happens once the procedure is done. Thanks again for all your feedback! Glad I joined this site.

These are the right steps in the right direction. I am a firm believer in doing research and getting all the info I can. I joked with my Surgeon that I thought I could do the surgery myself with all the research I had done. Ill make one more book suggestion its called "Okay... I've Gone Through Weight Loss Surgery, Now What Do I Do?!". I just ordered it myself, but it came highly recommended. Keep us posted, let us know how your doing.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

So proud of you Cat. Getting into those smaller size clothes is half the fun isn't it?. Keep up the good work!!!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?
