Surgery Called Off B/C of a Cold?

Recommended Posts

Can this really happen? :cry

I went for pre-surgical testing on Thursday and yesterday received a call that my white blood cell count was a little high (the nurse said 10 was normal; mine was 12).

They are going to test again on the morning of my surgery date and if my count doesn't go down, surgery could be postponed.

I don't feel like I have a cold, or anything wrong with me at all, but I guess I'm fighting off something. I'll be so bummed if I get another date.

I'm going to take zinc lozenges, drink lots of fluids, and rest this weekend.

While I was at work yesterday a customer came in. She said she had been away from school for the week, I asked her why and she said she has MONO I was polite, and the minute she walked out the door I washed my hands and sprayed the place with Lysol disenfectant spray. I' d would be super upset if my surgery was post- poned cause I got MONO!!!!

Yup, happened to me. Delayed for a month. It sucked. But in the grand scheme of things, it's better to be delayed than have additional surgical risks.

While I certainly agree it is better to be safe than sorry, I am hoping for you that your level comes within the normal range!!

Crossing my fingers for you!

Thanks everyone. Just a couple of hours after I posted this, I felt like I had a cold. Suddenly very tired, sore throat, stuffy nose. My husband just went to get some Airborne for me. I'm hoping it will pass before the 21st!

I asked my GP for a shot of antibiotics the week before my surgery. The same thing happened to me and I headed straight for something quick!

I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for you that all will go well and this time next week you'll be banded and branded, LOL. That's what my husband calls me.

Sounds like you have a plan, feel better soon!!!

Thanks everyone. I woke up today feeling a lot better; I *hope* better enough to go through with surgery. Thanks again for all the good wishes.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
