I am curious if post op your chewing as much as is suggested for us pre opers? It has been suggested that I chew each bite 20-30times! I can do twenty now and this took a lot of practicing. However, I am realizing that I do not like a great deal of food when I have to chew this much!!!

What has been your experience been?

I chew and chew and chew. It has just become a way of life. I feel better when I do because since I way so little I let the food linger in my mouth longer. Also its better for my digestion

I'm pretty bad about it. I chew more than I used to, but not as much as I should. It's difficult to break old habits!

For me this has been the hardest part since having surgery! I know I do not chew as much as I should and when I don't my sleeve lets everyone know about it!! Loud rumbling and gurgling no pain though just feels strange.

Thank you for posting! Good to know. 30 chews per bite just seems extreme to me. Sounds like post op it is a good ideato be aware and slow down, but its not important to count your chews.

This is a bit embarrassing but I often find myself chewing something for so long that I realise I am avoiding swallowing! I am taking this as a cue to stop eating now and do a very polite spit out :-0

Wow. We are certainly on the opposite end of the spectrum. Have you always been that into chewing?

At first thought mastication seemed simple, but it is more complex. You're keen to have picked up on this and use it has a cue for being done. Brilliant. I will have to remeber this. Maybe one day chewing eat bite 20 times won't feel like such chore.

I'm having this issue of not chewing enough at 4-weeks out but my stomache is not warning me. Feels just fine. I get more gurgling from liquids. I am eating slowly, taking small bites and waiting in between but I need to work on that chewing!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
