Is The Pain Worse Than Labor?

Sorry I am having my sleeve In a week and a half? But, I have a full plate I run my own business, am a mom of two and one of the two is only 1 the other 16 my hubby is great but for the ladies that understand they dont quite do it like we may;) I won't have very much down time my girlfriend who has had the sleeve says I will be in loads of pain and on my back which I expect but I am also thinking I am reading these forums and there are some powerhouse achievers in here!!! So please just tell me I am thinking I'll be down for four days and then easing my way back to my best norm ?

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated and thank you to everyone who posts

Everyone is different and each surgery pain level is different too. For me the VSG surgery was not near as bad as my 2 seperate shoulder surgeries. Labor 1st time was terrible..2nd time better. I used the heating pad everyday for almost 2 weeks to help relieve gas pain on my left side. You can manage it and it will be over soon. Then you get to enjoy the best journey you have ever been on!

Hi Parris, I did have pain the first hours after surgery that required morphine pump however, I would say it was Not anything like my c-sections (3) It was more like aching and abit of stinging pain the next few days. Try to stay calm & I hope you bounce right back with very little pain! x

I just had surgery Monday! I had some pain during recovery but morphine quickly took care of that. Haven't had any pain since I been home actually doing very well. I have liquid loritab but haven't used it yet.

I did not think the pain was bad at all - the gas pain the first day is pretty uncomfortable but that went away pretty quickly with strolls around the hospital, which were enjoyable. I had more pain with about a baskillion needle sticks and 2 IV moves, turns out I had internal bleeding and needed a couple of blood transfusions which necesitate multiple CBC's (like a draw every 4 hours all through the day and night - and I am a terribly hard blood draw as it is. I still have bruises and my surgery was 5/21 lol.

But the surgery pain was remarkably little - now tiredness is another story, I was utterly exhausted for weeks, but that could very well be due to my low red blood count after surgery. I was not taking my pain meds after 2 days, and truthfully my period cramps are worse so i saved them for those times of the month.

I too was worried about pain but just felt like I did a million situps. The only major discomfort is the incision where they remove your stomach.

I would recommend an ace bandage for tummy support. You will be tired, sore and a little bloated but much easier then labor. I also had a nausea patch that I asked for (put on night before surgery and lasts for 3 days). I attribute this to no nausea post op. You will need to rest the first week but will feel a lot better during week two.

Everyone does experience their own moments of discomfort but in general I think it is not too bad considering the type of surgery.

I thought my c-section was more painful in the first few days but the pain between both is lasting the same length. I'm 10- days pot op and only now feel like I'm getting back to normal and can bend and move normally. I'm slower to recover though.

Everyone has a different experience, but let me share mine. I had pain when I woke up after surgery. My first word was "pain." They must have given me something because I went to sleep, woke up and never had pain again, not even the gas pain so many people post about. I took no additional painkiller in the hospital, no pain medicine at home. It was a little uncomfortable getting out of bed in the mornings, but once out of bed, I was good to go. I took it easy at home and when I went on an errand run (I didn't drive.) about five days out, I was exhausted in no time. Gradually I gained my strength back. Picking up your one year old may be a problem as doctors typically limit the weight you are allowed to lift.

As it was already mentioned, everyone heals a a different pace. For me, the surgery was relatively pain-free...I didn't even bother getting my pain meds filled once at home. The worst part of the surgery (well, post-op) was the intense pain when trying to eat scrambled eggs. I was doubled over, had my husband "burp me", cried, everything. I learned that eggs are not MY friend!

I was, however, tired for a week or two. In short, of the 5 surgeries I have had which involved cutting my stomach, this was the easiest.

To me nothing like labor pains, I would take a gastric sleeve op anyday. It did not hurt as much as I thought it would, and I am a big cry baby.

I've had 5 surgeries including 2 C-Sections (I labored without pain meds and on pitocin for hours with my first baby). To me, the pain from my sleeve surgery didn't even come close to comparing to that of labor and/or c-section recovery!! I actually didn't even have much gas pain. I was sore and used my pain meds a bit in the hospital (the nurses kept on telling me, "You know, you really can use the pump!" but I just didn't seem to need much). Once I was home I only took my pain meds a handful of times. And, the 4th day after surgery (the day after I was released from the hospital), I walked around Target leaning on a cart for an hour. I have no complaints about my sleeve surgery. Best wishes for a speedy recovery!!

I thought that the pain was minimal, much less than I expected. Certainly nothing like childbirth. I found some of the sensations irritating, such as the dry mouth and odd sensations of drinking Water with my new sleeve, but a surgeries go it was fairly easy. I had no gas pain at all. The fatigue was my biggest problem- the first week I was absolutely wiped out.

My surgery was 13 months ago, and I do not think the pain was very much of a problem at all. Remember, this is laproscopic surgery...tiny little holes, and minimal cutting of muscle, which is what causes pain post surgery, usually. The nausea I had was more uncomfortable than anything having directly to do with the surgery. But the meds to control the nausea soon got that well in hand. This is NOT a hard surgery. You should plan to take it very easy for two weeks at the least. Then plan to rest a LOT more than usual for 3 months after that. The main thing, you get through it and never look back. I do an hour of aerobics five days a week and Run circles around people ten years younger than I am (65). Don't let any fear make you worried. This is the best thing I ever did.

The nausea medication they prescribe before surgery is something I would definetely get - I did and had minimal nausea, really the only time was that first time sitting up in the hospital - but it passed quickly.

I think the worst right after surgery was feeling deperately thirsty with a very dry mouth. I lived for those little swabby sponges dipped in Water they give you. For the first few weeks after surgery I was pretty upset, feeling that I would never be able to get a good couple of swallows of liquid down, you can sip only tiny bits at a time at first - now after a couple of months I can take very satisfying drinks - nothing like the chugging/guzzling I could do before, but much better.
