Question About Mindset After Surgery

Recommended Posts

My father had RNY. I have been consulting him on the changes I'll go through and how life might be after. He was the heartiest of eaters before surgery. He seemed to always be eating and alot of it. He was like any of us emotionally eating. I had asked him what changed after surgery that made it to where he didn't do that anymore. He said its a mental change after surgery that everyone experiences. I'm wondering is this true? Has anyone else had this change? How has surgery affected your mindset?

It isn't automatic, you need to go in to your surgery with the mindset change, choosing daily to make the healthy choices.

I think at some point you either choose to change and deal with the reasons you ate, or you don't and have trouble later on. Our head hunger can come from an emotional place, or we use it to fill gaps in time, or to take the place of boredom. It seems like at some point those issues will be smack dab in our face =p I am going to be starting counseling soon so that I can meet these issues head on and try and solve them so that I can continue to be the healthiest possible.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
