I have been on an Optifast diet since July 2 and my surgery is July 30. It was hard the first week but got better. I have been tempted to eat but have not. I am amazed at myself! I guess different doctors have different requirements.

Here I was feeling sorry for myself that my doc prescribed a 14 day liquid diet - 600 calories 80-120 grams of Protein. No sugar, no carbs. I can drink sugar free Clear Liquids, skim milk, and broth. I am on day 3 and days 1 and 2 have been terrible. I can't imagine doing this for an entire month. You guys are so strong. As for cheating. I think that it's important to keep our eye on the prize. I also don't see how anyone can expect a morbidly obese person to stick to such a strict diet without any other tools for managing the hunger. When I'm at work, it's ok. However, the weekend has been so hard. I am doing my best. I did cheat last night and I ate a pickle spear. It was heavenly. It's sad that I think a small pickle spear is cheating, now! Perhaps all of this is good for me after all. My frame of reference is changing.

The best way to deal with the hunger is keep yourself busy. Now we have the Olympics to watch... perhaps do some project as well.

You guys have made me feel a lot better! I am on day 3 of clear liquid broth and my surgery is on Tuesday. Today after church, what does my ENTIRE family do, you guessed it, lunch! So, I ordered fire roasted vegetable Soup and just ate the broth. I have felt so guilty all day! Thank you for making me feel better.

Are you serious, you felt guilty. Yesterday my family pulled the same move. I had to watch them, eat great looking food. Me on the other hand, I'm eating broth from chicken noodle soup and having to leave the chicken and the noodles. The waitress was looking at me like I was crazy when I just ordered a soup. Then looked at me like I was insane when she picked up a broth-less bowl with chicken and noodles.

I guess I just felt guilty that I even went! The waitress did the same to me with the veggies left in the bowl. She kept asking if I was unhappy with it. I should also mention that the soup had a giant crust of cheese on the top and... I sure did eat it! Haha! Don't put crusty cheesy goodness in front of a chubby kid! :)

Yes! The pre-op diet is the worst part of the surgery....but just keep thinking about your goals and desires....I kept that present on my mind....

You will get through this....this too shall pass....

I cheated 2 hours ago. Just a piece of meat. I wasn't tempted, I just wanted to see if something solid would settle my stomach situation. But it didn't so I'm back on hardcore. No regret.

I am 3 days post op and the only thing that kept me going was knowing that my surgery could be cancelled if I cheated. I read where one dr. turned back after starting the surgery. Anyway hang in there it is sooo worth it. Tricks I used ... Went to bed early, stay busy, eat different broths, keep track of everything. Good luck everyone!

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
