Hello all!

My surgery was 7/18 so I'm only a few days out. I was wondering when did you start exercising? I don't want to mess up my healing process. I want to start walking inthe treadmill at least a mile, when did you start? Did you also start other types of exercises?

It depends on your doctor. Mine said I could swim at 2-3 weeks when my incisions weren't scabby anymore, but said to wait for anything else other than walking until 4-6 weeks out. I started going to the gym & doing weights at 5 weeks with a trainer & he just took it easy with core exercises for a while because he didn't want to hurt those muscles.

I have been walking since day of surgery. i'm now week 4 and walk 4 miles usually every other day. Started out only being able to walk half a block :) I also do Water aerobics 3 days a week but am not allowed strenuous activity til week 6 :)

I've been doing weights since the day I came home from the hospital. I got permission for 10 pounds or less. I walked for the first two weeks then went back to the gym but was told no twisty moves (like elliptical or dance classes). So it's been walking or treadmill mixed with light weights until I got clearance for full workouts (4 weeks? 6 weeks? I can't quite remember).

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
