What To Take - Modified For Mexico?

Recommended Posts

I came across a great list of suggested items to take for surgery, but since I'm travelling (7+ hours air) I was trying to slim my suitcase down.

1. did you carry on?

2. If you carried on what were the necessities?

--I want to take my laptop because I want to be able to watch a movie or two but I haven't been in the air in 12 years so i don't know if that's really necessary.

-- shampoo/cream rinse, etc. are the travel bottles acceptable for carry on or is it the total amount of liquid?

This is some information off the TSA website

311-3.gifAll liquids, gels and aerosols must be in 3.4 ounce (100ml) or smaller containers. Larger containers that are half-full or toothpaste tubes rolled up are not allowed. Each container must be 3.4 ounces (100ml) or smaller.

311-1.gifAll liquids, gels and aerosols must be placed in a single, quart-size, zip-top, clear plastic bag. Gallon size bags or bags that are not zip-top such as fold-over sandwich bags are not allowed. Each traveler can use only one, quart-size, zip-top, clear plastic bag.

311-1.gifEach traveler must remove their quart-sized plastic, zip-top bag from their carry-on and place it in a bin or on the conveyor belt for X-ray screening. X-raying separately will allow TSA security officers to more easily examine the declared items.

The laptop can be carreid on, but sometimes difficult to open, use, as far as comfortability. I have not had my surgery yet, but I did fly to SanDiego to watch my Brother in law graduate the Marines. My flights were 1.5-2 hours long. Now this was the first time ever for me on a plane. (small town, dirt road, country girl here) All my flights had tvs in the back of the headrest of person in front of you. I am not real sure on the fees, but you can swipe your card to watch tv from movies, to regular stations suce as abc, nbc, cbs. etc. Now to save money i assume you are allowed to watch movies on laptop as long as you wait til they approve you to turn your components on. I just found the seats and space limited.

The limit is 3 ounces for a liquid. You do need to place your liquid bag on top through security along with your laptop. They will have you turn on your laptop just to make sure it is a laptop. After they give the ok to turn on electronics devices on the plane you can use your laptop:). You will also have to remove your shoes, so make sure especially on the way home you don't want to have to lace anything. I'm leaving tomorrow and just doing a carry-on for my husband and myself.

Remember to bring some cash in smaller bills if you want to tip the nurses, drivers, etc. :) They work really hard and definitely appreciate a tip!

Never thought about tipping nurses, etc. But then again it sounds like the level of personal care far exceeds the states.

HOw much would you tip various people?

Thankyou for the information on flights, movies etc. I guess I need to get on the US airways website to figure out bag weight, size etc. and if they also do movies. It would be a very long flight if i'm watching a boring movie. I have a small rolling suitcase but I don't know if it's small enough.

My husband and I just flew united to costs rica for my surgery. They had on demand direct tv for 7.99 for flights longer than 3 hours. We did not have to open the laptop just take it out of our carry on to scan. Had to take off shoes etc to go through security. The limitations above are for carry on. The bottles of Shampoo and stuff are fine in your checked baggage. Please be prepared for your trip back with some Protein powder u can mix with Water. I could not stomach what I took and airplanes and airports r not friendly to recent bariatric patients. My husband walked all over Houston airport to find me chicken noodle Soup so I could sip the broth. I was 8 days out for my ride home. After 4 hours from costa rica to Houston and 3 hr layover then 1.5 hours to Memphis and going through customs and immigration I was exhausted and blacked out. I have never felt so bad in my life. Hope some of this helps u.

Ok so I had nothing else to do, and I got the notification that there was a response in the forum, After reading your post, I went ahead and pulled some information for you.

Carry-on bags

Size requirements

You're allowed one carry-on bag and one personal item. Personal items include a purse, briefcase or laptop bag.

  • Up to 45 in/115 cm (14 x 9 x 22 in or 36 x 23 x 56 cm)
  • Up to 40 lbs/18 kg

Carry-on rules for US Airways Express

Not sure if you’re on a US Airways Express flight? Please check your confirmation. If you're on a flight operated by Air Wisconsin, Colgan, Piedmont, PSA or Trans States, you’re allowed to carry on 2 items.

  • 1 personal item (such as a purse or laptop) in the cabin and;
  • 1 small carry-on bag. Your carry-on bag will be tagged, placed in the cargo bin and returned plane-side or in the jetway when you arrive.

Here is the link for Overhead movies as well as movies on demand. Again I am unsure of the fee associated with these. http://www.usairways.com/en-US/traveltools/intheair/entertainment/movies_current_na.html

They even have wifi for your laptop if you choose to be on the internet. Plans start at 4.95. Here is the link. http://www.usairways.com/en-US/traveltools/intheair/wifi.html

Pack light. You won't need much. Everything I brought fit in my carry on bag. Including my cpap. Which I really didn't need to take.

I would take laptop.

Whether there are movies or TV depends on airlines and whether flight is international. For example, on any domestic (US) flights, US Airways has NO inflight...only to hawaii or off mainland. United is roulette, somtimes has, sometimes not. Southwest--nothing. Virgin America....hear it is great. Rather than chance it, u will have backup with laptop!

Thats my problem. I've not flown alot in the last 20 years and it was over 12 years ago when I did fly last. I don't remember what fits under seat/above seat. I have a small rolling suitcase (I have to get it out of the attic to measure) but I'm sure that wouldn't fit under the seat (probably 24"). I have a computer bag that can fit my laptop and a few other essentials if necessary but not meant for bulk. I was thinking maybe a gym bag instead but everyone says get rolling and dont check your bag. I'm not trying to buy new luggage for this trip. Most of our travel is by RV so it would go to waste.

I better get to the airport very, very early because this is goign to be a nightmare.

take both the rolling bag and the computer bag then (IF the computer bag can attach to the rolling bag so that you don't have to lug it).

My shoulders used to hurt/ache from carrying the laptop bag on my shoulder through airports....it's a pain.

((

most computer bags will fit under seat. I travel quite a bit. I have a Rick Steves computer bag which does NOT fit in overhead in smaller planes (the turbo prop kind) where they gatecheck your carryon's...it will fit under the seat. Just measure ahead of time. Even that bag tho, I can throw in a small purse (which I then take out after getting the carryon into overhead and perhaps the computer bag...). You can have TWO things.....the one with personal items/laptop/purse AND the carryon luggage. I think carryon is restricted to like 18 x 9 x something....(go to your airlines website and find the description). The personal items/laptop/purse just has to be able to fit under the seat, and that is like 9 inches high by 20 inches wide (maybe?)...I will measure my rick steves bag if I can find the measuring tape.

What I see most often in the security line is folks getting stuff taken away as they throw the bottle of shampoo/mouthwash/etc in their carryon. Or have a full water bottle in there. The hotels will most likely have shampoo/conditioner/lotion, if you can deal with their brand. Put all your liquids in a sandwich size baggie and put it in an easy to reach place so you can grab it to put in the bin separately. Most of the time, I tell my family NOT to wear flipflops on a plane, but in this instance, take shoes that you can slip/on off without bending over on teh way back and if the only shoes that will work is flip flops, that's what it has to be. (my flip flop rule is after reading Pilot Scully's (spelling?) book about how he manuveured the plane into the Hudson rather than crashing...it is all about preparation for emergency and passengers can prepare for emergency by being dressed for the emergency, i.e., sturdy shoes that will help you get out of a plane, no nylon clothing, knowing where the exits are, etc.).

Thank you. That helped greatly. I wasn't planning on flip flops because I understand support hose need to be worn and that I'll probably be cold post-op. 7 hours of freezing in-flight is not my idea of fun.

Luckily i dont use alot of product, hair or otherwise. Need good creamrinse and my toothpaste so I'll have no problems there. I guess I'll have to buy a drink at the airport.

I see you are in Maryland, what airline are you flying? I will try to help you plan this....this is do-able.

(socks for the cold feet and I hadn't heard of a support hose requirement, other than if you are prone to clots....hmmmmm...will have to go read my info (am not with Dr. Kelly, so maybe this is his thing).

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I'm in Houston so kind of near you and had the sleeve in Dec. Down 61 lbs. Feeling better. Was definitely worth it. I hope the everything is going well for you. Update us when you can!

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

      2. Doughgurl

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜
