Has everyone out there had to go through a apnea study? I just found out today it is one of my requirements. I know at least 20 people that have had this done over the years and were told that they had sleep apnea and talked into a c-pap machine that sits in there closet. They always try it out and either they can't wear it or it comes off in the middle of the night. I really do not want to have to do this and spend the money that it requires. I think it is a big rip off. I was told that wls is elective and that is why. I have had other surgeries in my life that were elective and never was forced to to this. Any advise?

If u have it, they will tell u how many times per nite you stop breathing or your blood oxygen falls below a certain number. Then, if you use the machine, it can prevent stroke. If you don't, you gamble. I learned to wear mine because I don't need a stroke. If you bhave it, your insurance will cover the machine.

You will have a million other tests and hoops to jump thru b4 surgery...this ain't so terrible...just ask them to use the odor free glue

My was a pulmonary function test think its the same you clip you nose and blow into a machine and they measure things are they doing a sleep study?

That is a pulmonary function test you are talking about. I have to do it also. The sleep apnea test you have to stay overnight and they hook you up to all kinds of wires and measure how often you supposedly stop breathing.

Your rightbI didn't have to do that but yes you must do it it for your saftey

It effect your anesthesia

Thank you, I was wondering the same thing. I have had 5 surgeries in the past 2 1/2 years without this even coming up or being questioned. 3 of them with the same surgeon and anesthesiologist. I go in 3 weeks for a consult. Hoping that is where it ends....

I too had a major surgery and sleep apnea was not an issue, they didn't even mention it.

I had to take the test too. I had to take a small wristlet type machine and place something on my ring finger and on my index finger. Got the results back today. My letter states .......the test suggests that I have obstructive sleep apnea. I go to a class and they will go over my results with me then. But I have the appointment with the surgeon on the 16th. this Monday. I am unsure how this will effect my surgery date. ugh!!

The weird thing is that I don't feel any symptoms at all.

I was tested and diagnosed with hyperventilation and sleep apnea. I cried myself to sleep the first week because I had to wear that sexy mask and live plugged into the wall...and I travel internationally for work, I cant tell you how stressed I was trying to figure out how to make that work right in some 3rd world country where I couldn't ask for distilled water (in retrospect I was being dramatic, all that has worked out easily)....but forced myself through it, knowing the stress it puts on your heart. I had edema and was putting on weight daily. Now...OMGosh I would kill someone who tried to come between me and my CPAP. I didn't realize how strongly my life and health were being impacted until I actually had a few weeks of good rest under my belt. The test was kind of uncomfortable for me. Lots of wires, really nice room but you know people are watching you sleep on a camera so that was weird. But nothing uncomfortable.

Rosy I know you were sleeved because I looked at all the threads you started. All 15 of them. But how long has it been and if you lost all kinds of weight why didnt you go get checked by another study to see if you still need it? Your setting may be way off from your initial ones.

The reason why I am asking is the docs want to put everyone they can on the machine. But how many people are cleared once they have had the VSG? Thats what I am waiting for. As soon as make it to 200lbs I will definitely go get another study done

I did a sleep study because I wasn't sleeping well. Also, I was told that I snored like a freight train. The study showed that I had a high of 40 episodes an hour. So, now I use a CPAP and it's made a huge improvement in my life. I no longer snore at night and I wake up feeling refreshed.

P.S. I'm hoping I won't need the CPAP after I'm sleeved and lose weight.

Thanks capt, but I did have the pulse ox overnite test a few pounds ago and I still needed it then. As of thurs, I've lost 100#. I'm still @ 95# shy of a normal bmi...so its ok for now. I know many are released from this after losing but I have pulmonary hypertension, as well. I will see what to do when I lose another 20. My thyroid med is down somewhat and I no longer need diuretics or asthma meds. Those happened almost immediately. This is taking longer. I got time

I had a sleep study pre-op because I was exhausted all the time and found myself falling asleep while driving. Being diagnosed with sleep apnea was actually a relief because I knew what was causing the problem. I'm 10.5 months out and still need my bi-pap machine, but I'd beat someone up who tried to take it away from me.

I can definitely tell when I take the mask off in my sleep or don't use the machine because I'm very tired the next day. I have had a follow-up study done and it shows that I still need the machine or oxygen to sleep without problems. I'll keep the machine until I can bag it up and put it in the closet. Insurance has paid for mine in full, which is great because I will need it until goal, possibly a little longer, although my doc says that I won't be using it in six months for sure.

As soon as I started using the BiPap, the swelling in my ankles went down and my energy level quadrupled. I've also now driving a 3,000 mile trip twice without issues with wanting to fall asleep while driving. And, yes, I hauled my machine with me and used it every single night.

I was told the same thing when I was Banded 5 years ago. My sleep apnea was/is very bad and my cpap is my best friend. I can't sleep without it!

I had two major surgeries in the last year, and had to bring my cpap to the hospital with me. They don't want you having a stroke or dying. The cpap is not that bad. I don't use the humidifier anymore, too cumbersome, especially with travel.

My whole BiPap fits into a custom made bag that's about the size of a briefcase. I can set it up or take it apart in less than 5 minutes, including putting water into the humidifier. Is mine unusually small compared to other machines? I use a ResMed machine.
