Hi All, New To Forums, This Is My First Post...pre-Diabetic

Recommended Posts

Hi there, I have been lurking and reading posts for a couple of weeks, in preparation for making a final decision to have VSG. I am 43, mother of two, working full-time, BMI = 35, pre-diabetic. My current weight is 214, and this has varied up and down about 20 pounds over the past 4 years (since my son was born). My grandmother died from diabetes related complications, my mother is insulin-dependent, and I desperately want to avoid that path. My main reason for considering surgery is for the potential benefit for blood sugar management and insulin control, though I know weight loss will help my health as well. I would be particularly interested in feedback from others who have had diabetes remission following surgery, or how surgery has affected those diagnosed with insulin resistance. I would also welcome feedback on surgeons in Baton Rouge, although I like the one I met with already (Dr. Bellanger). Thanks! Stinker

Hi Stinker, welcome to VST! We are so glad to have you join us here. My grandmother was diabetic and passed from complications as well. When I was diagnosed as borderline diabetic, that is when I decided I need to do something. I want to be around to see my kids get married, have grandkids and all the wonderful things there are to enjoy in life. That is when I made my decision to have weight loss surgery as well, and have never once regretted it. As for my health, I am no longer pre-diabetic and my doctor says I am extremely healthy!

I had well-controlled type 2 pre-surgery, and about 10 weeks after surgery I was told that I could consider myself in complete remission. A1c has been below 5 since 2 months after surgery. I still test 3x a day and make a calender weelky to make sure I am varying the time of day I test - NEVER over 110, even after waking up....pineapple juice spiked me 12 points from 82 to 94...

no meds, no shots, just testing to play it safe (I HAVE caught a few lows, so I keep my meter relatively near)

:)

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
