Drinking Too Quickly

Recommended Posts

I started full liquids on day 2 ( while still in the hospital) and purees on day 5 per my nut. Tolerating everything well. I can still only eat 1-3 ozs at a time though, and I'm totally fine with that.

Hmmm' date=' we probably need alot more information before we can help answer your question about when you'll lose weight!

When was your surgery?

What is your current food stage (liquids, mushies, soft foods, solids?).

Are you tracking what you're eating (carbs, Protein, calories, etc.)?

Are you exercising (depends on how far post-op you are...)?

Are you drinking enough water/fluids (at least 64 oz per day)?

If you're close to your surgery date (less than 2 weeks post-op) it's likely you've gained Water weight during your surgery. It can take up to 2 weeks to lose that "gained" weight and start losing from your pre-op weight.

If you can answer some of the questions noted above, I'm sure we'll be able to give you more insight into what might be going on with you (though of course, your best source of accurate information is your surgeon and nutritionist!).[/quote']

Hello, I had surgery July 2nd. I am happy to read it is normal to have gained Water weight. Kind of funny though...I eat barely nothing for a whole week and don't lose a lot??

I had surgery the third and I can drink 2 ounces every 15 mins. 8 ounces should take 1 hour. But if I wanted too I could drink more but I don't. My question is when is it safe to drink more and how much? I guess I'll find out on my visit the 17th. I can also start purrees then too, I can't believe how sick I am of Protein Shakes already but I'm sure a lot of that is in my head.

Mine was pretty close to this...full liquids on the 3rd day and purees day 10. I seem to be tolerating everything pretty well except the Protein shakes...they make me feel queesy...I just take a pill afterward and that helps. Today...I am having a starving day...all I want is something to eat. I had oatmeal for Breakfast, refried Beans for lunch, scrambled egg for a snack. I feel way too full now! Of course I only had about 6 teaspoons of each item. I hope I am not over doing it!

I'm 7 days post-op. My instructions were to consume 4 ozs. of liquid an hour for 12 to 16 hours each day. That's very challenging even when I am here at home. I start back to work on Monday. I doubt I will line up my 1 oz. shot glasses and throw one back on every 15 minutes as my buzzer goes off if I am in a 2-hour meeting. The 4 ozs. per hour regimen takes a lot of concentration, which means you can do little else but "sip" for 12 to 16 hours. I confess that sometimes I cheat and take only half an hour to eat my sugar free frozen popsicle because otherwise, it would melt and that would be really messy. I also don't sip anything during my 30-minute walk in the evenings, a sin for which I make sure I say 3 Hail Mary's every night before I go to bed. So far, I haven't had to make any trips to the ER, although every time I have to down one of those God-awful Protein drinks (have tried 5 different brands - the best one tastes like rancid milk), I am tempted to dial 911.

Can't wait until I start the Stage II post-op diet. My understanding is that besides pureed/baby food, I will be able to have flaky fish. I can already taste that first bite of grilled tuna. When it hits my taste buds, I will probably start crying!

Ohhh...this is sorta me!! I'm only 4 days post op. Keeping down four ounces of broth at a time easily! Can drink Water all day, eating my Jello and sf pops. Spreading it out but was starting to think I was taking in too much Fluid too fast. guess not? I feel like I could drink more but won't for fear of stretching. I am hungry cuz no Protein shakes(drs orders). What is a swallow test? I see dr Monday for follow up and am really hoping for mashed potatos!!!

I was so worried about this too as I can drink Water like there is no tomorrow and got scared when someone told me it could stretch my stomach. I did some research and found out otherwise and oh so relieved! They want you to go slow at first because it can cause pain and nausea and then you can slowly increase with comfort. Eventually you should be able to drink 8 ozs in 5 to 15 minutes (to my relief) according to this article: https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/bariatrics/_documents/nutrition-hydration-nutrition-after-bariatrics-surgery.pdf . Here is another that says water will not stretch the pouch: https://primesurgicare.com/can-drinking-water-stretch-stomach-after-gastric-bypass/

Hiii!!! I am only 5 days post op..and as of today I can easily drink 16 oz of Water, Powerade zero and milk in 40 mins. I thought I wasn't going to be able to do that. I don't think that would stretch the stomach since it's over a 40 minutes period...but I'm not sure. How fast are you drinking? And how many oz?
If you add Protein to my milk or water, it takes hours for me to get 8 oz down. I just can't drink it. The taste is soooo different than before surgery. So I've been drinking 3-8oz cups of skim milk which has 8g of protein per serving. So I'm getting almost half of my recommend protein plus I eat yogurt so that helps. I just don't want to loose my hair!!!!!
Can you drink a lot of anything including protein?
I'm 2 Weeks Post Op and I still can't drink 16 oz of anything. It's not that I don't be thirsty. It's the baby sips that's aggravating. And since I can't drink fast enough to quinch my thirst and also trying to avoid gulping I just kind of say to hell with it.. I'm trying to drink the Gatorade 0 to avoid dehydration but I know I'm not getting enough fluids. Anyway hun Good Luck on your journey.

Yeah, sip, sip, sip is the most important thing. A few sips here, a few sips there. No gulping. No straws. No drinking 1/2 hour before or after or during meals. Otherwise, staying hydrated is a good thing.

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
