Thinking About The Sleeve

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone.

I'm been thinking about getting the vertical sleeve done. I have been thinking about it for the last few months and I'm 90% convinced I want it done. Obesity kinds of runs in my family. My brother, me and my mom are obese. However both my brother and my mom got the sleeve done nearly a year ago and they look amazing. The only thing I'm hesitant about is my age - I'm 19.

My dad is kind of against the idea saying that I'm too young to get it done and stuff like that. But he did assure me that at the end the decision is mine.

I'm 19 and I weigh 220 LBS. I have tried all different diets and everything but only for them to work and then fail.

So should I go for it? and what will I expect after I get it done?

Thanks!!

Hi. I am a newbie as well and just made my decision yesterday. I am 45 years old and have struggled with my weight all my life with many ups and downs. I see my mom still struggling at 65 years old. I do not want to struggle for the rest of my life. My advice to you is if it is safe to do the procedure then do it now while you are young. Good luck. Christi

My niece had gastric bypass when she was 18. She was able to enjoy a healthy young adulthood, marriage, pregnancy, etc. without the excess weight. She was morbidly obese at well over 300 pounds at 5'6". Today she is a healthy 160.

If you have not discussed your concerns with your physician, now would be a great time to do that. Let us know if you have questions that only other sleevers would be able to help with, and keep in touch!!

I feel the younger you are, they easier the surgery will be. Why not be as healthy as you can be at a young age? I wish I could have done this years ago....Good luck with your decision.

Thanks for replying everyone! I think I will go for it. I already went to the clinic today to discuss the surgery and everything and the physician stated that there are several young people that have done it and he noticed that they recover faster.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
