Having surgery on wed, how bad is the nausea? How long after surgery does it last? Is the nausea due to the smaller stomach or surgery itself?

I had nausea the day of surgery and the next day. By the 2nd day, it was much better. Now, 11 days post-op I get nauseated occasionally but the medicine really cuts it out when it hits. I think mine was mostly from anesthesia at first.

Don't know what causes the nausea...but it was my number one issue in the hospital. None of the IV meds would touch it, but once I was on an oral pill it magically went away. I'm now 7 days post op, and am down to one pill a day, which I almost didn't take this morning. When I was in the hospital, all the drs and nurses said that nausea was very common with the sleeve.

There's a plethora of antinausea pills. I was not nauseous at all until I had the upper GI. The gastrique or whatever the crap is called was horrible and I got hives from it, which I guess is unusual. I was on 3 iv meds and I got a shot in my muscle in my arm of one plus I had the patch on I received before surgery. It went away the next day and the peppermint tea did ease my queezy belly.

One thing to know about anti-nausea medication is that it can cause Constipation and dryness of the mouth.

I wasn't nauseous at all.... no gas either.... Your nurse should administer Zofran or another anti-nausea med in your IV before surgery.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
