Drinking Before, After And During Meals?

Recommended Posts

I've been sleeved since Feb. 2010. Lost 78% of the weight and got complacent. Threw all the rules out of the window. Absolutely stopped losing and recently began creeping back up. The rules are there for a reason and I believe when we begin to rationalize changing the rules to "suit our bodies" we are setting up ourselves for failure. I have recenly began the 5-day pouch test to restart my weight loss and returning to the rules my doctor gave me from the very beginning.

After over 2 years my advice is "don't change the rules". It helps to know the "why" but just do it!

I know I can eat A LOT more when I drink and eat at the same time. This is what I do to prepare for races when I need to increase my calories. It triggers the pyloric valve to open and send food on down to the intestines creating more room in the stomach.

Wow, that is so weird!! I get tragically ill when I do that! It could be because I'm still only a few months out, but it's enough to deter me...well....indefinitely!

I've learned to time my bites and drinks. Last Saturday night, the wife and I went out for dinner. I had a race the following morning, so I was looking to "carb up". We split a Shrimp Scampi with cream sauce on linguini. Oh, there were also these little rolls. I ate one.

I take a bite, put the fork down and chew the life out of it. Swallow and wait a minute. Take a drink ... wait a minute ... repeat. I was able to pretty much eat my half doing this. My wife actually didn't finish hers, either, but she also had a side salad. Basically, we had a whole (our size) portion to take home.

The next day, ran my race (won my age/division ... yea!) and came home a couple hours later. I was hungry, so I pulled out the leftovers. Again the portion was the size of what I ate the previous night. Since I wasn't trying to "carb up" at this point, I did not drink with my lunch. I was only able to eat half of that portion.

So, the night before, drinking with eating I was able to eat twice the amount of the same meal the following day ... and I didn't have one of those rolls at lunch, either ...

So, yeah, I can definately eat more when drinking.

Listen to your NUT, not your gut... I know listening to my body got me to 273 lbs

Listening to my BRAIN is what got me in this position. If I was listening to my body all along I would have been fine.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
