Incisions Question - Bandaids On Or Not?

Recommended Posts

I had my surgery in Mexico & when I left they cleaned them & put bandaids on them.

My post op instructions say to shower daily & pat the incisions dry. So does that mean I should take the bandaids off then?

Did you have bandaids on your incisions or were they 'open'?

What do you mean by "open"? Are they not stitched or glued shut with the bandaid on top? I would advise remove the bandaid and let the incisions dry out naturally. That's what was recommended to me, but my incisions were glued shut.

Oh yeah, my incisions have steristrips on them, so they are shut. But wondering if they should be open from the bandaid now?

Thanks!

I would think you could take the Bandaids off. I went home with just the steristrips and they came off within about 2 days or so. :-D

I would say leave the steristrips on but take off the bandaids. Those bandaids will just get nasty and keep too much moisture on the incisions. I had just the steristrips which eventually come off on their own.

Take off the band aid. Shower, let them dry for a little while and then put the band aid back on. I wish I had that problem. My stupid nurse told me I couldn't shower until my post op appt. (10 days later). I was leaning over the tub and doing spongebaths for a week and a half. Then my surgeon tells me, "I told them to stop telling people that! You could have showered the day after surgery". Congrats on the big life change!

Take them off and leave them off. The incisions need to stay open to air heal well. The bandaids keep them too moist and they will have a harder time healing. The steristrips will fall off on their own. Dont pull them off, you can even trim the ends as they start lifting up to keep them on for a little longer if you want to. (Sorry, I don't mean to sound bossy, I just do this for a living lol) Congrats on your surgery!

I was told no bandaids over the steristrips, but I wouldn't put them on anyway due to latex allergies. I was allowed to shower my first day home, which was heavenly! I allowed the steristrips to come off on their own and didn't pay much attention to them even when they came off. I just picked them up out of the shower and threw them away.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
