Hi all, my friend is having surgery in June. Shes got a thyroid problem. I'm not sure if its hypo or hyper but her doctor is telling her that she may not lose more than 80 lbs the whole surgery. I'm not sure how much she weights but i'd say more than 300 less than 450. Is this the truth? She's now worried about getting the surgery because shes not sure that it's going to be worth it for her. Shes about 28 years old. What do you all think?

Ps....shes on medicaid so the surgery is free and so is the skin removal surgery afterwards. Not sure if this has anything at all to do with it but i figured i'd throw it in there.

I am hypothyroid and my doctor said nothing about it. The more weight I lose, the happier my doctors will be!

Are you losing slower becase of your hypothyroidism? I was shocked to hear this and its discouraging her. I would say even IF she only lost 80 lbs.....its better than keeping it. And i would think that even IF she lost weight really slow.....she would EVENTUALLY get there.

I am also hypothyroid and below goal. I don't think I lost any slower because I have hypothyroidism. I have no idea what her doctor meant--ir her meds are properly adjusted, she shouldn't be hypothyroid anymore. The whole point of taking them is to get your TSH in the normal range.

Thanks guys, i don't know anything about the thyroid issues but that just seemed fishy to me. I would think your doctor would want you to lose weight no matter what. I will relay this info to her! i appriciate your help and any other comments!

I have hypothyroid too (Hashimoto's). My doctor just told me to see him more often as I loose weight so he could keep track of my TSH to make sure my levels are good. maybe she can get a second opinion?

An Endo has zero way to know how much weight a person all lose with surgery. His job will be to monitor her TSH. T4, T3, free T3 during her weigt loss and adjust her accordingly. My thyroid has nearly zero function and now I'm on the second lowest dose of thyroid meds available. I've lost 80 lbs since my preop diet started on January 20th. I ain't done yet. :)

Great to hear of the success of Hypo patients having success with this procedure. I have Hashi's and my thyroid hardly works. I also have Celiac, which from what I hear goes hand in hand. I am worried that my weightloss will be slower, but this is a change, and I want to make sure it sticks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
