Worried About The Protein Shakes - What If I Can't Do It?

Recommended Posts

Hi all... I am a pre-op... I am approved and awaiting my surgery date. At first when I heard that I would be required to have only Protein Shakes for two weeks prior to surgery and three weeks afterwards - my only concern was it would be tough for the two weeks as I am sure I would be hungry and being around my family eating normal food.

But I just attended a Protein Tasting hosted by another support group... it helps you to decide which Protein powder/shake/meal substitute you would prefer to use. Well - I hated ALL of them! Really! I thought that it would taste like Carnation Instant Breakfast - or perhaps SlimFast - which is doable... but all of them tasted completely vile to me! How can I get through this!!???

All I can say is...keep on trying different ones. I disliked all the powdered ones I tried but I love the Muscle Milk light, ready to drink ones, I get them at costco, both chocolate and vanilla. Go to a GNC or health club and buy a single and see if you like it. Those are the only ones I drink.

I gave up on Protein Drinks and I am 5.5 weeks post op. I am hitting my Protein targets but I pretty muck only eat high protein foods. I am sure there is a Protein Drink that is tolerable for me, I just haven't found it yet.

I am a Muscle Milk fan too. strawberry Creme version of MM is fantastic. Just buckle down and do it. It prepares you for after surgery and beyond. You will have time to try different brands. I lost 30 pounds in 3 weeks befor the surgery, believe it or not. I actually lost more in the 3 weeks before surgery then the 3 weeks after...it was well worth it and gets you off on a great start for after the surgery...Good Luck!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
