Post Op Diet And Maintaining Weight

Recommended Posts

My husband is 8 months out and has lost 100 pounds. His starting weight was 267 and he now weights around 166 to 170. He is 5'6 1/2" tall. Here is my issue. He does not like any type of warm food. If I cook something he just does not care for it, with maybe the exception of chicken after it is cold, or shrimp. He has a very limited diet and craves cheddar cheese, wheat thins and sugar free popcicles and chocolate. I have had him start drinking liquid Protein again. He will eat grits or oatmeal for breatfast occasionally.

I find that I have no real "taste" for food now either. It is just something to keep the grumblings of my stomach quiet. However, I do make myself eat Protein, vegetables and occasionally fruit. Not every day but several times each week. I still drink 17 to 20 grams of protein daily.

Since surgery (mine was four months ago) I just find cooking distasteful. Maybe this will all pass. I have lost 40 pounds and I am down to 160.

I even thought about having him eat some icecream or something to get more calories in.

Anyone have this experience?

Thanks

I don't have alot of tast for food either - so I try to keep pushing the "best" on myself - I think I need to reenvent my taste buds (or NOT, lol).

Hmmm ... not here. I would say I was/am just the opposite. Early on, the food and flavours did get monotonous. The textures were all the same and the flavors, while good, became stale. I seeked out bold flavors such as sharp cheddar and blue cheeses, vinegar based sauces ... anything with a bold flavor. And now, since I am over 10 months out and can eat anything, I can honestly say my post-op food selections are pretty much EXACTLY what I was eating pre-op. Just FAAAAR smaller quantities.

Now what might be the issue ... IMO ... is fear.

I did worry about what would happen if I return to my old eating habits. Before I started seeking out bolder flavors, I was afraid. I was losing weight doing what I was doing, eating the same foods day after day, so why should I change? What if it hurts to eat those foods again? What if I gorge myself and stretch my sleeve? Well, I didn't worry about the last one as I had a talk with my surgeon about stretching the sleeve, but I know that is a big concern amongst a lot of people here.

So, he may just need a kick in his complacency, but I think it has to be a self-kick. You can suggest, but it is a demon he has to address and conquer himself.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
