Restaurants...

Recommended Posts

How have restaurants been handling requests for smaller portions, substitutions, children's portions when you go out to eat? I heard that there are laminated cards that can be obtained somwhere that basically says that due to medical reason(s), you are unable to eat the portions normally given in most establishments. Thanks, in advance for your feedback!

I do not have a card and don't know if I did have it that I would use it. I really don't mind anyone knowing that I am banded but I really don't want my waiter to know. LOL Usually what I do is order and split with my kids or I take it home.. My only advise is don't go to a buffet.. You won't get your money's worth...

My surgeon, Dr. Sanchez in Monterrey Mexico came to see us the day after surgery at the guest house and gave us our cards. It has a picture of the lap band and what size and I think it came from inamed. It has on there that it is MRI compatible and that we can only hold 4 oz. and his name and number on it and it is lamanated.

It's very handy. You can also go to obesityhelp.com I believe and print one up if I'm not mistaken.

Hubby has a card, sounds like what mysherrijo got.

We've used it a couple of times to order from the kids menu when the waitress balked. Both times they were very nice about it when shown the card and allowed him to order after all.

Dr. Fox gave my sister a card when she had her surgery. I have been with her when she attempted to use it. I won't name the restarant but its intls are G.C. The cashier had no clue what WLS is and called her Mgr to pass us off, needless to say she got no discount and got to be embarassed to boot. Granted I live in the sticks Granbury, Tx, but you'd think a national chain would have some policy in place. If you live in a big city you might have more sucess getting a discount. Twin did say she has used her card in Dallas where she lives and the chinese restrant she likes to go to always gives her a kids price.

I haven't had any trouble at all. I've gotten to asking if I can have items a la carte since I can't eat much from surgery. Most don't question and are quite accommodating. I order what I want and make up my own plate combination. If a restaurant becomes difficult I'll just not go there the next time. I usally can find something on the appetizer menu.

Never had trouble. Went out with some fellow lap-banders the other day and we went to a place where we weren't sure we'd be able to share. I just told the waitor we were emdically unable to eat a meal each, so we wanted to share.

If you're concerned about no tbeing able to order a children's item, then don't. Get a regular one, and have a few meals to take home. Or just order a side item, or a la carte, or an appetizer (and you'll probably still have leftovers).

I have never had a problem, even in all-you-can-eat places. Most places have even brought the food out to the table divided already on two separate plates for my friend and I...or at a buffet, charged me a child's plate price.

Some buffet places, the less expensive ones, I just don't bother saying anything. After all, if I was a "normal" person with a light appetite, I would only eat a little, and pay the same price. I would consider that I received my money's worth.

I order to split with my hubby OR one of my kids,

Most of the time we order 3 meals and then pick of eveyones plate like a big family buffet :D

we love to share and taste eachothers meal, and we normally do have left overs~

When we go somewhere and we do not all share I'll order something small sized like an appitizer or Soup salad etc. If I do order a full meal I just take whats left home for lunch tomorrow.

Nana~

I've never bothered, although you wouldnt really do that sort of thing in Australia - children's meals are for children and are usually chicken nuggets or hotdogs and chips, that kind of thing, not something you'd want to eat as an adult - and doggy bags are actually illegal due to health regulations.

To me, the cost of a main course or entree anywhere I'd go is $12-$20 and to me that's a cheap price to pay for a night out with friends or a romantic dinner with my hubby or a fun night with the family at a bistro or similar. I couldnt give a toss how much of it I actually eat. So I dont ask for smaller portions, I choose something that's on the menu and dont ask for it to be modified anyway, I eat what I can and just leave the rest.

Although we did go out for Chinese with family a few weeks back and I begged off the banquet, there's no way on earth I'd get through 12 courses and to pay $50 for it was a bit silly. I just ordered a dish and shared it with the kids with some rice.

I have one and used it without problems with the exception of Fire Mountain. I didn't complain. They have had problems with people making fake ones. I can understand. I use it when I can and if I can't, I guess there are worse things that can happen in life.

I dont have a card, but if I get a whole meal I end up taking 1/2 home. I went to Ruby Tuesday this week and ordered the new burger and substituted the fries with a veg or baked potatoe. I ate just the meat from the burger, and 2 bites of potaoe. I enjoy getting just an appetizer, or a bowl of Soup or chili. Some restaurants are fine with substituations, just ask. I dont even mention that I have WLS.

Usually a restaurant meal is now anywhere from three-four meals for me. I have problems eating it all before it goes bad, so I've taken to ordering appetizers. The only problem is that the darn appetizers are so big that it's still two or three meals. I'm definitely considering getting my card laminated and starting to use it from now on because I hate wasting so much food when other people are starving. Sometimes the childrens menu looks fine and appetizers rarely contain balance like veggies and are often fried. I'm trying to eat home cooked meals alot more often now too.

We tend to go to alot of Thai, Malaysian, Vietnamese, Indian restaurants where we can share meals so it's not a problem.....last week we went to Yum Cha and it was great, I just had a small amount of most things that came around.

I think the portion sizes are more of a problem in the States than in Europe and Australia, I was in the US in Jan and was amazed at how HUGE the portions are.

My hubby and I are selling our home... and so we have alot of 2 hour showing windows to fill so we have been going out.

Bennigans will allow me to order off of the kids menu. They have a chicken salad. I usually get a baked potato to go with it, and take it home. Can not eat the whole salad either!

Double Daves will sell you pizza by the slice off the buffet for $1.00 a slice. I get them to make a thin crust meat eaters pizza and get one slice. Works for me!

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
