How Long Before U Could Swallow Pills?

Recommended Posts

I'm asking because the liquid allergy meds I'm taking now are gross. I want to be able to get back to taking a single pill.

I was two weeks out when my doc said I could start with pills again.

They gave me pills at the hospital the next day. I've had no problem with pills, although I dislike the stuff that comes in clear capsules. They kinda want to stick to my innards.

The only liquid mess I ever took post op were IV - I was on pills as soon as I left the hospital.

Welcome Chell! Great question because I take two pills every day and one of them I cannot miss, so I've been wondering about this myself. I plan on bringing this up when I see the dietician 10 days before surgery.

I also had regular pills/capsules right out of the hospital.

I had pills in the hospital, and have had no problems at home with them either. Same place used to have you crush them for a month or 2, but changed their policy.

I was on pills in the hospital. My acid reducer is a capsule that I have to open. One doctor said the pills have to be about 5mm in size

I was on pills from day 1. My acid reducer was a capsule and they go down fine even though they look large. I have been taking that one and the nausea one everyday since surgery, up until a few months ago but I am 9 months out now. I have not had to crush anything. I got a cold and did not take the huge capsules like dayquil and nyquil though.. I was scared of those whoppers! I took tylenol too with no problem.

Thanks for the input! My pills are in capsules and time released, so I have to take them intact. We shall see how I do!

My Effexor is time released and I took it the day after surgery, no issues. Personally, I prefer taking meds in liquid or sub lingual form now.

My surgeon allows his patients to take pills the day you go home from the hospital (day after surgery). I was afraid to for the first two days (coming out of a lapband and pills were almost impossible for me), but when I tried I had no problems at all. At first the only problem was that I had to take such tiny sips, and the pills I had (surgical complications) were large, so they would stick in my throat a bit.

I'm dealing with a sinus infection now and can take my Rx antibiotic, 4 ibuprofen and a tylenol all at once. ;) Of course, I'm then full for 3 hours.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
