I Think I Want Dumping Syndrome

Recommended Posts

Think it would be wonderful if I got sick every time I ate refined sugar! It's a major weakness of mine and i think this would help.

Remind me why I don't want rny?

LOL at you!! Dumping syndrome is highly unpleasant! Do you really want to be in the bathroom with diarrhea every time you eat something your pouch doesn't like? It could be sugar, but it could just as easily be fat or spicy foods.

My understanding of RNY is that they leave a large portion of your stomach separated off from the main portion of the stomach, so you have restriction, but that area of the stomach is still susceptible to ulcers and stomach cancer. No thanks! Also, the RNY reroutes your food from your pyloric valve directly to your intestines, which means you don't have that pretty little valve down there to hold food in your stomach. This means that what you eat slides into your intestines before it's digested...which is another cause of dumping and discomfort. This also causes malabsorption of the Vitamins and minerals that are present in food. Yes, you lose weight, but not in a pleasant manner.

By contrast, sleevers typically don't have dumping syndrome and can eat small portions of most foods without worrying about dumping. We also absorb at least some of the Vitamins and minerals from our food and we feel satiety longer when we eat. We still have to take vitamins to supplement the food, but the balancing doesn't have to be as precise for sleevers as for RNY patients.

I haven't done tons of research on RNY because I knew someone who had RNY years ago. While she lost her weight, I'd have rather remained fat (and I did) than to have an RNY done after watching her struggles!

There are videos people uploaded on YouTube while they're experiencing dumping syndrome... no thanks! It looks very unpleasant.

It might be a deterrent, but I wouldn't want it.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
