Have started my prelim requirements, had barium, labs, cardiac and start nutrition next month for my 3 class requirement. I am extremely excited but extremely scared as well. Being a paramedic/RN I know oh to we'll the complications so that scares me even though complications are rare. Anyone else out there about to go through with surg and is scared about it and anyone out there that already had surg please give me good hope and stories. I also think about the liquid diet and am worried about messing up on it. Who out there had trouble with liquid diet before or after.

I just finished up my insurance requirements and received an email today stating they sent my info to insurance. I'm looking to have surgery in July or August. There's a mix of emotions involved-- fear, excitement, apprehension. I too am afraid ill mess up or wont lose weight. In addition, I am also an RN and look at everything from a medical standpoint.

However, things will be okay!!! You've done your research and have hopefully made the best decision for the outcome you're wanting. Best of luck!!

I too was scared that I would be the one to have the leaks or abscess or whatever complication was available. However, I knew I had to do this for my health and to take back control of my life. I had yo-yo'd for years. I researched my surgeons and was confident I had chose one that would do his best to make sure I was a success under his care. He answered every question I had no matter how stupid it may have sounded to him. My surgery was a success, no complications, dropped 5 medications, 32lbs since surgery date, 8 weeks out and happy as a lark! :)

liquid diet is doable and if you approach as the first step to taking back control of you then you can't fail!! God bless you!

Guys and gals, I had every nasty co-morbidity you can think of (DVT, Pulmonary Emboli, sleep Apnea, borderline Diabetes, Rheumatoid Arthritis, etc) and I came through surgery fine! No leaks, no complications, just higher energy and I'm staring at 100 pounds lost at almost 8 months post-op. What would YOU give for 100 pounds lost in 8 months? How about a couple of weeks of liquid diet, a couple of hours in surgery and a reduced capacity to overfill your stomach? I think it's a fair trade-off, don't you?

So I have always been a big guy, My BMI is currently 42. Exercise and diet never worked for me. Id loose a small amount of weight and gain it back, I come from a family where they are all heavy and have diseases associated with being obese. So I decided to have this surgery through Abington hospital in Pa. I am in the process of lab work, and seeing my specialist for atena select approval. I hope all this work will get me approved. My friends and family don't understand I feel like. Some are thinking that I'm looking for an easy way out, but I'm not!!! ive been doing my research and I know that this surgery is far from easy. Here is the thing I know I want this surgery and I will go through with it, but I just don't Want to die! I'm terrified when I go under I wont wake up. Has anyone else been this scared. Luckily I have my partner with me every step, but he has doubts of his own. Any advice for me? My mind is going a mile a minute. I am just excited to feel happy and healthy and actually love myself.

You are correct, it isnt the "easy" way out! It is just a tool to help you succeed. I was scared, to be expected with any kind of surgical procedure so dont have any doubts, you will do great, just think of the benefits of the surgery for you. You will he healthier, happier and live longer! I would do it all over again in a heartbeat! I am six months out and 29 lbs from goal already! YOU CAN DO THIS!!!!! Keep us posted on your journey!

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
