Considering Vsg Surgery - Wondering How Common Revisions Are Down The Road?

Recommended Posts

Yes, the way they do the sleeve makes it hard to stretch. I mean, this would take EFFORT on your part. Not just overindulging occasionally but actually eating to the point of pain and discomfort and sickness on a daily basis to stretch. Honestly, I'm nearly 2 years out and if I eat two bites too many of Pasta it HURTS and I get sick. I can't imagine doing that enough to make the sleeve stretch permanently!

So no, I've seen no talk of revisions from VSG to another surgery, unless someone got VSG as a first step of the DS and wanted to wait a year to see results before finishing their operation. This is for much larger patients that have a bigger amount of weight to lose and I've only seen people talk about it once or twice in the nearly three years I've been following the boards here and on ObesityHelp. I did see a lady that was going to do the DS one year post VSG but lost enough she opted to just stick with the sleeve!

I'm 21 months out, started at 242 pounds (high weight 280) and I'm 5'1" tall. I was wearing sausage casing 18/20s prior to surgery and I'm now in a size small (sometimes XS, sometimes M) and I wear a size 6 (sometimes 4s!) so I can honestly say that even though it took me a bit longer to reach goal (17 months) I would never have revised to another surgery. I also self paid (10K with flights from Germany to San Diego to see Dr. Aceves) and it was worth every single penny!

With your stats you can easily do this with the sleeve.

Thanks for all the info! I've done more research on my own too & have started going through pre-op stuff for surgery now. My surgery is set for 5/14 at noon as long as all goes well with the preop stuff. I'm excited to get going on this journey.

Benjammin - My insurance is anything but "awesome" & doesn't even claim to be! They told us over a year ago that they didn't cover surgery unless the employer added a special surgery rider to the plans, which they wouldn't do since they're a small company & didn't see a need for it. I was able to get financing & even though the fees are crazy, I'd rather do it this way than not have it done!

I'm considering getting VSG surgery done soon and I've been reading a lot of posts here and elsewhere lately. I'm wondering how common revision surgeries are. If I have the surgery, I'm going to have to pay for it myself (with financing) and I don't want to have to spend $14000+ on surgery now and then have to have a revision surgery down the road. Are revisions really that common or is it possible to go through the VSG surgery and follow the diet & not need a revision in 2, 3, 4+ years later? I'd really appreciate any comments or thoughts about this.

My insurance didn't cover it either, but it was the best money I have ever spent. In the big picture of things, I felt that $12,500 was a small price to pay for leading a longer healthier life. I never really shopped around for price, but there seems to be a significant difference in pricing around the country, mine was done in Omaha.

For me, the break I needed to get things moving was refinancing my car today. That poor thing has come to my rescue financially three times now - I'm hoping it's the last. I intend to pay it down and give it a full service wash & tune up as a thank you. :)

Funny you should say this. I bought a brand new car with 0% interest for 5 years. I borrowed an extra $2000. The dealership said as long as you have good credit, the finance company didn't care how much you borrow, crazy no interest for 5 years. He said people do it all the time when they need money.

I didn't shop around either. I'm going through a place I trust. I don't have money or time to travel elsewhere & I personally wouldn't want to go elsewhere just because of the followup care & possible complications. Even if I don't have complications (which I pray I don't), I want my followup care locally. I could go to Mexico for a third of the price I'm paying, and I'm not saying that's wrong for people to do - I know plenty on this forum who are fine with that & that might be good for them & as long as they're comfortable with it, that's fine - however, I'm not comfortable with it. I've never spent this kind of money on something like this before, but I feel it will be the best $15,000 I've ever spent! Because of the fees and interest rates, I know it'll really end up being a lot more than that even, but it's worth it for my health when I haven't succeeded in anything else in the last 12 years! Some people might think I'm nuts for paying this much for it, but I know that it's right for me at this time in my life & I'm gonna make it work!!

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
