Cpap - Will I Ever Get Used To This ?

Recommended Posts

I've been using a CPAP for years and I use the full face mask (nose and mouth) as I'm a mouth breather as well. Trust me, it does get better. The first few nights are a bit rough. Make sure you have the humidity set high enough to not dry out your mouth and maybe look into one of those special pillows for those who use CPAP machines. They are designed so that if you are a side sleeper, like me, the mask doesn't slip off. They are a bit pricey but well worth it IMHO.

Good idea about the humidity and I didn't know about the pillows ! I had the humidity OFF, it was making me nervous. I feel like the biggest baby with this stinking thing.

One other thing, my tech told me that insurance requires an average of 4 hours use a night for 90 days to continue to cover the machine. That was a great motivator for me to use the mask. I'd tell myself to just use it for the 4 hours and then I could take it off. Of course, I ended up sleeping through the night with it very quickly.

I was told I have to use it 4 hours a night too. Tonight is a new night and I will try again and keep trying until I get it right. I look forward to it. :)

I've struggled with using a CPAP as well. I started seeing a new sleep disorders doc (diff from the one that first prescribed CPAP machine). Any way, this doc wants you to bring the CPAP to his office for fine tuning, and it really helped. I felt like the guy at the medical supply place adjusted it well, but the docs office really got it set right. I'd recommend seeing if you can get it reset, the airflow may be too strong.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
