I am 2 weeks post op and I feel like I eat too much. I can eat about 3/4 C. of refried Beans. I had some soft raviloi, and a yogurt. I can eat the whole yogurt cup. I wasn't able to eat that much last week. Is this normal? I feel like I am hungry a lot, and I can eat more than I have been. I try not to. I am sure it is head hungry going on...HELP!

Wow thats amazing I am almost 23 weeks out and I still can only eat 1/2C. I understand the size of the new stomach is different with each surgeon. The hunger feeling can be from gas some of the others have mentioned gas feels like hunger so I got gasX and it helped squash that feeling. You really have a great weight loss already hope you have continued success.

I just went to my pre op class today, my NUT was telling us to make sure we concentrate on Protein first. She made sure we knew not to add Pasta to our diet. She said stuff like rice, Pasta, starchy stuff is just taking up valuable space in our little sleeve. I hope this helps out a bit!

Good luck to you!!

Hellonurse is correct in saying Protein first. It does fill us up quickly and curbs hunger.

Also, realize that much of what you are feeling may simply be head-hunger or acid build-up. Although I've experienced both, I feel acid build-up most of the time if I haven't eaten on time. I am fortunate that I don't need PPI's to counteract it. If I drink a cup of Water, it all goes away.

Eat/drink slowly, you may be eating beyond your capacity if you eat too fast. This early out it may take longer to identify your personal "full-feeling." Allot yourself 20 mins to complete a meal. It is ok to throw a meal away or store it for later. Most of us got to this point because we were a part of the Clean Your Plate gang. As I was always taught that we should always complete what was placed in front of me.

In conclusion, Protein first, eat/drink slowly (very important), pay attention to your personal full sign.

Yogurt pretty much slides right through me these days. I consider it more liquid than food for my sleeve. However, you probably have a couple of factors that affect how full you feel.

First, you're early post-op, so your sleeve is still numb and may not feel "full" yet. That early post-op, I knew I was full when my shoulder hurt, not because my sleeve said to quit eating. Because of that numbness, my nut said to always measure my food and to try to under-eat the sleeve.

Second, you're still dealing with head hunger and acid issues. Talk to your doctor about taking some kind of acid reducer. I still take Tums daily (for calcium) because it works better with other meds I'm on. I also started taking an acid reducer at about 2-3 months post op and both help with the hunger urges. I was going to call it a hungry feeling, but it's not really a feeling anymore.

Third, you're on liquids, even if it's full liquids. They do not give you the same restriction that you'll experience when you get to eat denser Protein. chicken, beef and fish will all fill you up faster than anything you're allowed right now.

Good luck! This will be over soon! :)

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
