1 Month Post Op And Now Miserable With Reflux -- Suggestions?

Recommended Posts

I had surgery about a month ago and am very lucky that I have had no issues until this past week. I started having really bad reflux whenever I eat or drink. I have tried Prilosec, Zantac and Pepcid with limited success. They were out of Prevacid at the store today but I'm not sure I hold out much hope for that. Has Prevacid or anything else worked well for anyone? I'm going to call the doc on Monday but thought I would see if anyone has a good OTC suggestion. I am losing weight, though. Of course, that's because I can hardly eat or drink -- not really the way to do it! Thanks for your help.

Hey flourgirl,

I had surgery in Mexico and the dr there gave me a 6 month supply of a medication that was only 20mg and I had MAJOR reflux with it. I was recently hospitalized and there they gave me protonics through an IV--that's what the dr prescribed me when I left and it's 40 mg. I don't have reflux whatsoever now that I take this once a day. Ask your doctor for protonics or generic for protonics. Hope it helps!!

Have your regular dr for nexium, that's what I take. Trust me one day I skipped all my meds and I was miserable and realized how important it really was.

Hi there,

I have been through every reflux medicine there is and the best one for me by far is Zegerid. It's OTC and is 20mg each pill, and I take two. Works perfect. Hope this helps!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
