I had my surgery on March 29th at Texas Reginal Hospital in Sunnyvale Tx. Dr. Zakhour was my surgeon. I was so nervous going into surgery and had such a huge fear that something would go wrong and I would not wake up. ( I tend to worry alot) But everything went great. I was discharged from the hospital the next evening. I was in a bit of pain the first 2-3 days and had lots of gas. My doctor has me on a dissolvalbe privacid that seems to help. I have also noticed that the very best thing for gas is WALKING! I can not stress this enough people. WALK WALK WALK! I try to walk for about 5-10 minutes every hour. Nothing major, just a slow, peaceful walk. It sure helps me to pass the gas better. (which feels great) I also do the Gas X strips when needed but nothing helps like walking. It also helps with not getting blood clots. As far as the pain from surgery, it is manageable. I take my Lortab when needed but I am only taking it once or twice a day now. Im sore but not too bad. I have been on Clear Liquids but was told to start my full liquids today. Im a bit scared about that but I did have 2 ounces of no sugar added apple sauce and I did great with it. I noticed myself getting "head hungry" last night when my family had grilled chicken and baked potatoes....I was kinda depressed. So, I went for a walk and it helped ALOT! Good luck to all and God bless!!

I know what you mean. I cooked dinner for everyone last night and had to watch them all eat. I was sad and wanted "food" SO badly. I am 5 days post-op and got conflicting food info . I am waiting on a call from the surgeons office (have been waiting all day and have called twice actually) to see if I can have something other than clear liquid. I HAVE to walk more. Not a great "feeling good" day for me, took a nap gonna watch a show then walk. Are you doing any chores like vaccuuming or anything yet ?

To my fellow sleevers

I know the only stupid questionare the ones you don't ask (something like that) so here goes....

everybody talks about walking all the time in the hospital. I was hooked up to an IV pole with a bunh of junk - i was really fine, but when i wanted to get up to go for a walk - i had to buzz someone for help. In otherwords i couldn't walk much, especially every 5-10 minutes cuz i kept getting unhooked and hooked again. to the IV - very frustrating.

Actually the first time i walked i had to ask the nurse - she was surprised and said something like oh, when someone asks to go walking thats great, so she was very nice and helped me for 5 minutes or so - then back to bed.

Did this happen with anyone else, having an IV with a bunch of stuff, not being allowed to get up with help and then being able to walk

thanx

kathy

No, I am not doing chores yet...i have such a strong family support system and get tons of help. As far as being unable to walk in the hospital....my nurse is the person who really helped me understand how important it is to walk. the only thing I had to unplug was the IV and I was able to do that on my own. I have never been a fan of exercise (probably why I topped out at 330) but I really love to walk now.

I was hooked up to all kinds of things also. The day of surgery my surgeon came to walk with me. The next day my catheter came out, so. Did my walks after going potty since I was already unhooked.

I never even knew my catheter was there. It went in after I was put under and it came out before I woke up. I started walking the very next morning. I guess all doctors are different.

I walked a ton in the hospital and actually asked too the first time because the nurses hadn't come and gotten me up to walk - it was about 4-5 hours after surgery I think. I buzzed them and asked and they said, "SURE!" So I used the bathroom and then just took right off. I just wheeled my IV pole with me anytime I wanted to go walk and that was fine (also gave me something to hold on to when I was a little shaky the first couple of times.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
