hi

I am quite frustrated at the moment.I am 2 weeks post op and every time I try and go for a walk I get a very serious pain in my abdominal area (left) and my back.I also get this when I stand for a while and when I get tired.

Is this normal?

Yes, it is very common. I was told to limit exercise for 6 weeks after surgery. My surgeon also said to do what I could, but listen to my body. Sounds like your body may need a little more time.

For me, the abdominal pain was nerves and muscle healing after the surgery. Take your time ... this is not a race, but a journey. You will be able to exercise very shortly. Right now, rest, sip, and follow your eating plan. (Easier said than done, I know!)

Please keep in mind...you have just had major surgery!!! The pain will go away. It just might not be time to walk or just walk a bit at a time at this point. At just two weeks post-op, you are not yet healed. If it continues, you will definitely want to contact your doc.

Yes, I still have occasional back pain and I am 3 months out. Just take your time and listen to your body. You are on your way!

Thanks everyone.I am just so fearful of not doing the right things. And even though I fetch and drop off the kids at school,do the shopping, meet up with friends,I feel like im doing an aweful lot of sitting.

Anyhow,I will just do what I can.

Just stroll slowly, but on a very regular basis. Niiiice and easy. I got a little overzealous at that point and would forget myself and just getting in the car too quickly would cause a nice stab in the left side. The hernia repair made that worse too.

Find a Water aerobics class and join! It is not as stressful or as painful as going to the gym, but burns twice the calories! I did just water aerobics 3x a week for about 2 months after surgery, now I am up to 2 hours a day at the gym plus the water aerobics 3x a week!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
