Pay Attention While Eating And Drinking!

Recommended Posts

Hello all you VSGers! I am 1 week post-op, and I learned a very important lesson the hard way today. It was my first day back at work, and I was drinking fat-free chicken broth with unflavored Protein Powder (delicious). I must have not been paying attention, and drank too quickly. Suddenly I had excruciating pain in my abdomen, chest, and left shoulder. All I could do was put my head in my hand and whimper. My poor co-workers were standing over me wondering what to do. The worst of it passed in about 10 minutes, and now about 1 1/2 hours later it's still painful but bearable. I came home and took pain meds. I realize how very important it is to pay attention when I'm eating or drinking! I can't do the mindless thing anymore. I hope I can save someone here from going through this.

Yeah, I'm sorry to hear that you went through this, but I think it is one of those things most of us have to experience to have that understanding that things are different now. We can't drink and/or eat at the pace we used to. We have to slow things down which, for some of us, can only be learned by having an experience such as yours.

I know I had to cross the line, but I didn't do it again!!

Same thing happened to me the first week or so home... I got the "foamies" - Water just bubbled up - my husband looked it up because it was so bizarre! Now at just over five months out I can drink more at a time, but still have to take it slowly :) Hang in there!

So sorry you had to go through that! What lessons we have to learn - and remember, while going through the first several months!

(((hugs)))

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
