April Fools Day Surgery And A Conern.

Recommended Posts

Went for my consult and to confirm April 1st as my date. Getting really nervous. I am a bit worried because everyone I have read about says they had a leak test, and when I asked about it, she told me they don't do one. She said if there were to be a leak, the first two days would be too early for it. She said it was important to monitor for symptoms and follow up immediately if there are any. Has anyone ever hear of not having a leak test?

My research shows it at about 50/50. The reason is that if there is a leak, the stomach may be too swollen to show it until later on. It's just a doctors preference.

Oh, well that's somewhat relieving that it is not unheard of to forgo the test. Thank you for the info.

My doctor is known as being the best surgeon in my city - over 500 sleeves and zero leaks so far, and he doesn't do a leak test. He keeps you in hospital for three nights after surgery and if you are well with no fever by day three you're in the clear. Monitoring your well being at home is important but I don't think the leak test is imperative (or very pleasant from the sounds of it, so maybe just be grateful you don't have to have one!)

Thank Miss Pea, I am glad to hear that. I hope to God it doesn't happen, but I guess we all just have to be vigilant.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
