Did You Have A "drain" Post-Op?

Recommended Posts

I keep seeing where people had a drain in for a couple days after surgery. A friend of mine had it done and didn't have a drain. Is it more common to have one? For some reason, the thought of having drains freaks me out!!

I didn't have a drain, but in my paperwork it was explained that it IS a possibility, but it would be for your safety and healing. I was Soooooo glad I didn't have one though! Some surgeons do it just as a matter of course. Mine only does it when necessary, which doesn't seem that it's too often.

I had a drain...its literally not a big deal. You don't know its there unless you grab it. Its just a plastic ball that dangles. On the worry scale of the entire surgery, this truly is a level 0 - no worry. But if you must know more..you can find them in videos online...its called a JP Drain..

I had a drain too. I believe my doctor uses it on all of her patients. It's not a big deal. It is kinda gross but, it didn't hurt or anything. I also had the On-Q pain ball so I had all kinds of things hangin' out.

Yes, had a drain but they took it out the next am before I left the hospital. It was no big deal tho.

I had a drain, it was a plastic bag and believe it or not, the first 2 days the nurses drained alot of liquid out....on day 3 they took it out and I only wash it with antibacterial soap and rinse with clean Water. the drain site is covered by bandage and is almost totally closed up. Probably would already be healed however, I am on the go constantly, back to work 3 days out of the hospital, drove myself 130 miles home after long airplane ride....I do believe, if I would slow down and rest a bit it would already be healed,as the laproscopic incisions are already fully closed.

Drain really was no big thing....

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
