Single Mom Looking For Best Values

Recommended Posts

Hey guys my surgery date is scheduled for 2/29. I'm so nervous and excited. Having two teen boys I am looking for tips on savings my first few weeks after surgery when I am on Protein. What's the best shakes to get the most protein. Any recipes for shakes that don't taste horrible and had lots of protein? Thanks

I have older boys (18 & 21) in the home that eat anything and everything so I understand the need to watch the budget!!! Right after surgery, I used the unflavored Isopure and put it in broth and Crystal Light (while on clear liquids) and once I moved to full liquids I put the Isopure in everything....strained/creamed Soups, hot chocolate, SF pudding. I think I paid about $40 for the large tub.

Good Luck!!!

Check out the Premier Protein pre-made shakes. They are 30g of protein in 11.5 ounces. That's a lot of protein per ounce. Plus, they taste more pleasant than most. A lot of people rave about them. I buy them at costco, but have seen them at Sam's as well. I think I pay $26 for 18 shakes.

This is a great suggestion. Just want to point out that unfortunately they are not lactose free and some people become lactose intolerant right after surgery. (I have been for years. :( )

Actually just remembered reading something about their return policy. I think they take them back.

costco will take them back, I am sure of that. But they taste pretty good and the sons would probably take them off her hands. They are great for on the go, and my husband likes them and takes one from time to time.

I do not like the vanilla flavor, but my husband does. The vanilla has a bit of a grittiness to it.

Also, not related to your protein, but related to tips on savings with teen boys:

You may wish to precook and freeze some Entrees for the rest of your family. Perhaps some casseroles, etc. if they like that sort of food. I am surprised by how unimportant food is to me even at nine weeks out, and by how hard it is to get motivated to cook. I used to be an avid cook, and while I am sure that will return, it isn't there now.

Without a good game plan, it is way too easy to succumb to eating out for the rest of the family, which usually ends up being big bucks.

Another option is to have stuff on hand for the boys to cook. Maybe get them a cookbook if they don't already cook.

Thanks for all of the good information. I'm lactose intolerant now but my nutrionist says that may change.

I wondered about the cooking for my boys (14 &16). Im going to cook this weekend. It will keep me busy. Im excited but my nerves are starting to get to me.

Not sure I understand. You are lactose intolerant before surgery and your surgeon says you may not be lactose intolerant after surgery? Maybe I am wishful thinking. lol

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
