When Is Your Stomach Done "expanding" Post-Surgery? I Feel Like I'm Eating Virtually Half Of What I Used To!

Recommended Posts

I know that 65-80% of the stomach is removed with VSG, but as you heal the stomach becomes capable of holding more contents.

When does this stop?

I am shy of 3 months out, and I am capable of eating 5 ounces of food (more than half a cup!) and feeling some comfortable restriction. I then stop. I feel like I shouldn't be done healing, and there is likely room for more expansion.

I am already at a point where I've actually lost and gained weight. :(

I hear more often than not that significant stretching is a myth. I never take my meals to an extreme degree, or have had vomiting from over eating. I try to avoid testing restriction.

I am fearful that if I am capable of eating 5 ounces in a sitting now at a mere 84 days post surgery that this can only increase.

I feel like every week I can eat more and more, and I don't like it. I want it to stop.

This is a good question. I have lost weight about 1 week ago after doing the basic boot camp. But then gained it all back. Sometimes I wonder if this is my stopping point. So now I'm mixing it up. I'm reading a book called the metabolism miracle and am going to start an 8 week diet with low carb. Then today, I realize that my birthday is the 21st of this month and if I ate anything with more than 5 carbs my pancreas will kick in with way too much insulin and I will have to start over. Bah humbug..........

Your metabolism might be the type that you have to keep your carbs very low to keep losing. I don't typically gain the weight back what I lose. I just make sure once I'm done with the 5 days I still refrain from salts, sugars and total carbs over 60g. Continue with drinking lots of Water, and always Protein first.

*hugs*

It's not a race dear, it's a marathon. You will figure out what works for you!! Just never give up. Thats the only rule.

I think it was around month 8 I got to my total capacity. I can't usually do more than 6 oz of food if I'm eating properly. Some sleeves can go up to 8 oz though, just something I've noticed over the time of reading many stories.

Good luck!

My doctor moved me up to 8 oz. at a time ( food or liquids) last week (I am 7 weeks out now) but there is no way I can go over 4-5 oz. at a time with food, but I certainly can with liquids.< /p>

For me, it depends how much Protein is in the food. If it is just 15 grams of protein, I can eat more than 5 ounces. If it is 25-30 grams, I can eat 5 ounces but it will take an hour or so.

1.5 years out and I don't really feel that my stomach's capacity has increased after about 8-10 months post-surgery. Mind you, you can shove a LOT of food in your esophagus, but with experience, you'll learn to sense when whatever you ate is not making it all the way down and just starts piling up on top of your lower esophageal sphincter and then you know you should stop eating or else you'll feel unwell or have reflux later.

Got to total capacity about 10 months out. I can occasionally do 8 ounces but the food can't be dense. More usually 4-6 oz depending on how dense the Protein is. I ate a max of four oz and couldn't get in more until about 10 months. Then all of a sudden I could eat more. Everyone is different, but my surgeon said 8 oz is usually the max and less depending on the density, so I assume I'm about average.

This is so reassuring! I was afraid I was eating massive amounts of food!

The reality is I am staying stable at my weight, and that is a lot better than gaining.

I guess 5 ounces at 3 months out is not so bad.

BTW You look GREAT Blackberryjuice!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
