What Was Your Biggest Surprise Post-Op

Recommended Posts

Going for VSG on 2/28 and trying to get mentally prepared. Have heard and read a lot but was wondering if any you post-op folks had anything that surprised you or that you experienced after the sleeve that you weren't expecting.

Thanks.

My biggest surprise was when I went to my 7 week Drs appt and had lost 53lbs. I don't believe in weighing myself every day, so the day I got home from the hospital, I threw away my scale. I only weighed in at the doctor appts. And let me tell you, that made me so very happy. I didn't notice any stalls during the first year at all and only had perfect weightloss results. The other surprise was when i would "think" the clothes should fit, when infact I had "missed" the size and they were way too big. . .that was way cool. . . You will love your little surprises too! good luck

Immediately, it was the nausea post-op, other than that my surprise is how easy it's been! I secon'd the energy comment, I have tons too and can't sleep as long at night as I did pre-op (I was getting 9 hours or more and now it's more like 7-8).

Def, the speed of weight loss. I was prepared for a slow and steady journey but the weight started melting off and luckily hasn't stopped.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
