Vsg And Nursing School In The Same Month!

Recommended Posts

Hello All,

I've had to make some tough decisions over the past couple months. I have been trying to get accepted to a nursing program for a couple of years now. It's been hard for me because something always "came up" in my life where I had to postpone school.

I am having my surgery on 2/6.Ihave been working with my school advisor for almost 2 years now trying to get into a class. There has been a long waiting list since nursing programs are limited in NJ. I just got a call last night from the nursing coordinator at my school saying that she can get me in a class that starts 2/1 (5 days before my surgery)!!!! Of course, I accepted it and told her I would be in today to sign papers.

I'm nervous about being able to keep up with the nursing classes as well as take care of myself after surgery. The good part about the program is for the first 4 months its just classroom work, so I don't have to do any clinicals. I haven't decided if I wanted to tell her about the surgery, since I don't want to ruin my chances of getting into the program. The classes are 2 days a week so I'm hoping to only miss that second week.

I know everyone is different with how their body reacts to surgery. l'm hoping that I'll be able to keep up with the work, as well as my clear fluids!!

My surgeon said they have some patients return to work in one week if they are desk jobs. Maybe that will be the case for you. Good luck with school!

I'm thinking the same thing. I'll have to wait and see how I feel. I know I don't want to postpone school another second! But thanks barnbrats!!

Hi, RN here chiming in. I'm in NY and the nursing programs are just as competitive so I get what you are saying. I would do both for sure especially since your classes are only 2 x a week. I probably wouldn't tell your school ahead of time as you don't want to lose your spot.

Congrats on both your upcoming surgery and nursing school. School is tough but one of the best times of my life. My nursing school comrades were awesome. You'll love and hate it!

Hi,

I just wanted to check in and see how everything is going? Im in nursing school as well, in my last semester getting ready for boards and comps, doing clinicals, and my surgery will be 3-6 during my spring break. I'm nervous too and I hope everything worked out for you. I'd love to hear about your experience.

You'll be fine, I'm in medical school and got a VSG over the summer break - 2 weeks before we started classes. I am now on clinicals, so I'm often working upwards of 80 hours a week at all kinds of weird times of day, but I still find time to work out 3 times a week and I pack healthy food with me. I've succumbed to treats in the nurses' lounge at like 3 AM on occasion, but it's not that often.

Hello. I would love to know how things turned out. I just completed nursing school on 1/26/12 and I know I would have been a wreck trying to do both surgery and school. I went to an accelerated 16 month program. I hope everything works out for you!!!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
