Question For You Experts

Recommended Posts

I have hyperinsulinemia and pcos. I was sleeved on 11/16/2011 the day of surgery they took me off of my metformin 2000 mg a day. just cold turkey, I am losing weight but slowly would it help if I went back on the metformin? if the condition was there before wouldnt it still be keeping me from losing weight? I am still morbidly obese, under 3 finally but still obese. just wondering thanks in advance..

That would definitely be a question for your doc. Did your OB/GYN put you on the metformin? I'd ask him/her. It's possible you may still need it, but better check first. It'd be a drag to take that stuff for no reason at all.

My husband left the hospital with his sleeve and off all diabetes medication. Definitely check with your physician, but it's my understanding that if your diabetes is "type 2," it is most affected by your diet, and once you're sleeved, you don't really eat as much or the same types of food that trigger the higher blood sugar; thus, you don't need the metformin. But definitely check in with your physician. My DH happily left that, and all his diabetes medications (he was maxed out on 5 different meds!) behind immediately post-op.

The PCOS definitely puts a different twist on the situation. If the ovaries aren't functioning properly, then the hormones are wacked, and weight loss very very difficult. Even if insulin issues are resolved, ovaries can still be catching up. Definitely worth a look.

I would definitely check with your physician on this one. I am not sure there is anyone on here with a medical degree that can answer that and keep you healthy and safe.

hi sleevedmom

Remember as "they" all say, we're not physicians, but:

I have Diabetes II. The metaform was giving me trouble with my kidney, so they too me off it and put me on insulin :(. At the hospital they took me off the insulin - and said no insulin until i see my PHP. I saw him 3 weeks later and he said with a smile to stay off the insulin. More bloodwork end of January, but he thinks everything will look good still and i will continue to stay off the insulin. :woot:

Has your blood sugar and your A1C been normal since your surgery? If its still alittle high then I'm sure you still need the metformin. Atleast until your levels are staying in normal range consistently.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
