What Does A Leak Feel Like?

Recommended Posts

You would probably have severe pain, vomiting and running a fever. You do not give us much info on how you are feeling. best to call your doctor though

When did you have your surgery? From what I've been told (currently in pre-op), the risks for a leak usually lower after the first 6 weeks.

My surgeon told me it'd feel like a lot of pain and discomfort in the left shoulder/side. And of course as andersonlj stated- vomiting and fever.

Not alot of pain, I am 2 weeks post op and I am definately not vomiting and I don't think I am runnung a fever.

I just seem to have a new pain - the best way I can think of how to describe it - and I think I have had it a few days now. My Mom passed away on my 1 week post-op date, and I don't think I noticed until today that it was more than a twinge or two, it seems to be a full-out pain, persistent but not accute. I am 1100 miles away from home, and my doctor.

I would definately take the sysmptoms you describe to the local ER, ASAP. I just wondered if there are warning signs I could be experiencing.

Thank you for your responses!

Where is the pain you are experiencing? I had severe left shoulder pain but it didn't start out severe. It came and went for a good month or 6 weeks before it got unbearable. I never vomitted or had a fever. I had a leak. It was discovered at 9 weeks out - I had complained to my Dr's about the shoulder pain for a good month. They said it was acid reflux. NOT.

it is to the left and just at the ribcage , it doesn't go into the shoulder - it feels hard to pinpont sometimes...felling a bit below the ribs and then later lmost under my lower braline...

I fly home Friday, so if it hasn't gone away I will definately see the doctor. If it gets worse or develops further, I will see one here. Promise!

It could be from the air that they pump into your stomach for the surgery but if you are still there with your surgeon I would have him check it out.

Pookey - have you spoken to your doctor now that you are home? I also had a left side pain but it was very intermitent and never said to be a leak symptom - it was worse than the shoulder pain when it did come, hard to stand up straight and move at all. I don't know what it was, haven't had it since my abscess was drained - suppose it could have be related? No idea.

I see my doctor again today and will address everything then. It seems to still be there occasionally. I seem to get alot of discomfort to the point of pain right in the general stomach/lower liver area now - i burp soooo much. Heartburn too. Still very sore but also been crying alot. I try to avoid it but its impossible.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
