Now I Know Why People Are Sent Home With Drains

Recommended Posts

So I'm sitting here typing and I look at my hand it it has blood on it. Stupid me thinks I must have wiped my nose (nose got irritated from the O2). Anyway, I walk into the living room and my husband says' "You're bleeding." Quite a lot too. So I apply direct pressure and call the on-call surgeon. It tells me to just put a gauze pad on it.

Now I had noticed that there was a hard swelling underneath the big incision. That must have been some trapped blood.

Now I have my period. Oh brother. Bleeding from everywhere now. No wonder my red count was low. I'm going to go eat some Iron.

It stops in a couple weeks. Don't sweat it.

I was lucky, I didn't have to have a drain. Hope you heal quickly!

The same thing happened to me...no drain ....and I wig'd when I saw the blood. Didn't know that's how it heals. But, it does stop relatively soon.

Ahh now I understand better too. thank you so much for the information. I too have a drain which will be removed on Monday :woot: I was wondering if it hurts to have it removed. Is there anyone that had one that can let me know? I am so grateful for all of you out there. It is so nice to have so much helpful information.

It was not a pleasant feeling, but it didn't hurt. And it is over quickly.

i just had my drain removed last week, It is a feeling i cant explain, its so strange. you just take a deep breath, blow out and as your blowing out the doc is pulling. Over in 30 seconds. You will feel much better afterwards. I went home and slept for 3 hours after i got home. It is really hard to sleep with the dang drain. Good luck!

When the doc pulled my drain I had that sensation you get on a roller coaster, like your tummy dropping.

just weird I did not expect the tugging feeling..she told me it would come out easlily and I felt like it didnt but no worries...its not painful.. IMO not nearly as painful as having your stomach removed....lol it will be fine and better everyday.

It was a very weird feeling. It was like the roller coaster times 10. You can suddenly feel everywhere the tube is inside your body as it is pulled out. It is very weird feeling, but it isn't painful at all. It also is very quick.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
