Almost 5 Weeks Post-op And I'm Starving!

Mrs newme and all:

Heartburn: an actual sensation of burning (painful) in the esophagus sometimes with burping of bad gas. Can sometimes mimic heartattack.

Hunger: sensation of emptiness in stomach accompanied by salivation (sometimes) a sense of lite headedness sometimes and a desire to eat.

Where on earth do u see a resemblence between these two body sensations?

Really Rosy....

Are you kidding me? Prior to your surgery, did you try medication for weight loss? They feel the same. The only time I have excess salivation is when I want to vomit. They are very similar for many. Heartburn does NOT always include belching or gas. Don't knock what other people percieve as a similar sensation. There is no need for sarcasm on this forum. Obviously other people have had the same sensation. Thanks for your medical knowledge though on the interpretation I have on my own body.

If you want sarcasm, I can produce it. Just say when!

What I posted was MY definitions of heartburn and hunger.

Yes I lost over 128# on phentermine. Then I broke a couple bones and ran into physical diffiulties that prevented me from exercising. Plus, the doc decided to get me off phentermine after several years. The weight started to creep back on. I freaked. That's what brought me to vsg.

I was taking a medication that gave me severe heartburn which only 5 weeks of Nexium 40 would alleviate. I am still taking nexium 40 and have not had any sensation of heartburn at all even tho I am back on the medication, as well. So I am intimately aware of MY definition of heartburn.

Enough people in the forums have voiced the same idea that hunger is really heartburn. That don't mean they are right. It doesn't mean some of them aren't right. What it means is, at least for me and a few other respondents, hunger sensations to do not equal heartburn sensations.

It is frustrating to be told repeatedly that I am really having heartburn instead of hunger and I should take MORE of the PPI than I'm taking. Just because someone else said it, doesn't make it true.

I'm not able to satisfy my HUNGER with 6 ounces (per day) of Protein. I AM HUNGRY.

Sunshine:

I am almost 3 months post-op and I definitely feel hungry throughout the day. I also have late night cravings, which is KILLING ME!! When I feel hungry I just try to drink Water until I dont feel the hunger or cravings anymore, but it is getting worse.

I feel your pain. Any help or insight on this would be great.

MsKendra, I have had this also, and have used the Water. Before my sleeve also. I find that with the acidreflux, even the water doesn't always help. What I have found however is a sugar free mint tends to sooth it. Just something I found that works with me. Good luck. I hope it gets better.

I'm almost 4 weeks post-op, and like most obese people, I don't know the difference between hunger and thirst. When I feel that I'm hungry, I drink Water for about 15 - 20 minutes, and if the feeling persists, I assume that I'm hungry, and I have 1/2 c. of a Protein food. I get most of my Protein from Isopure mixed with unsweetened almond milk. When I haven't taken in at least 70 grams of protein a day, I get hungry. I can't imagine being told to not drink protein shakes! My surgeon recommends them. Your sleeve isn't failing; your body needs fuel. Carby foods trigger insulin, which not only makes us store fat, but triggers hunger. Protein keeps us full, and triggers glucagon, which allows the body to burn fat.

Great points Mrs Bionic Broad...love the name btw. I also feel that sometimes I have not gotten enough of the right foods in. It is really a balancing act. I haven't tried the Isopure. But I may try the almond milk. Rice milk is pretty good too. In the past (prior to the sleeve), my most successful weight loss attempts were with high protein intake also and less carbs. The Proteins take much longer to burn off and helps delay the hunger. As a kid I had severe hypoglycemia, and I had to learn to eat enough protein to help my body maintain the energy. I have learned already with the weight loss I have had so far that hypoglycemia is again an issue for me. So I am back to ensuring I am getting enough protein in. Thanks for your insights, I am sure they will be helpful. :)

I've been hungry since, no joke, two days post-op. LOL. I was hungry the minute I stopped dry-heaving. I've been hungry ever since, and am well-treated for acid with a PPI and Gaviscon as needed. It's not acid, it's hunger. I thought that might suck, but I'm actually glad about it. Not having any appetite would enable some bad behaviors on my part.

So your surgeon is a bit of a fascist. I think you should follow the rules, but I also think you should follow your own common sense. If you are getting hungry sooner after a meal than your next meal time, then add in healthy snacks! I am on three meals and three Snacks per day, it totally helps keep my blood sugar more stable and I feel less super hunger as a result. If you want to use Protein shakes, use them! They are good for you ferf*cksake, I can't imagine why they are outlawed. I don't use them on my plan, but I know most people do.

I did my level best to get to 1000 cals per day as soon as I could -- with three meals and three Snacks, it's doable totally. I'm up to 12-1400 now. I lose slowly but comfortably -- and I do LOSE.

Btw, I didn't get my sensation of "full" back for some time, but it did eventually come back, so I do feel full now. I still get hungry again a couple hours later though. Meh, so it goes. I do have to use self-control and willpower, it just requires a lot less than pre-op.

I don't think your sleeve has stretched -- there is no evidence that they do so.

Good luck!!

Rosy,

I'm less than four weeks out with the sleeve, so I am not qualified to make assumptions about anything. What I am questioning is the amount of Protein that you are getting. If you are getting 70 - 80 grams a day, and are still feeling true hunger, I'd say eat a small Protein snack. I've been all over these boards since November, when I found out that I was going to be sleeved, and NOWHERE have I encountered one person whose doctor said no Protein drinks, or SF Jell-O, etc. To me, your doctor is setting you up for failure. Personally, I don't know how you are still sane, and I hurt for you. You sound like a neat lady who deserves better than to be starved.

Swizzly you got me convinced. I'm going out for a new container of almond milk and going to load up on a Protein shake. My mouth Is frozen from the ice pops.that's the only snack I was given.

Though I wonder if canned mushrooms or greenbeans would be considered a snack? I don't really understand how to use those because he said 2 oz Protein and if any room left then the veggies...hmmmm...maybe that's supposed to be my snack? Well, I wonder how chocloate Syrup (absolutely no nutritive value) would go with strngbeans???? Uh nah ....????

Thanks for the feedback

Swizzly and Bionic kiss kiss!

I just had a few hours of peace! No driving eat eat eat sensation. No freezing. Just peaceful sit and do whatever...focus easily. Holy cow and all it took was a Protein drink. Thanks both so much for the support and feedback. I used Protein drinks before the vsg and they helped tide me over and I was lost without them. Now I will integrate them int the plan and use them as snack and supplements if I go nuts again. I am contracted 3x a week with a personal trainer and the other 3 or 4 days I workout on my own so....

Huh? What is she going to do? Demand he do it again? Are you 100% in control of your sense of hunger now that you've been sleeved?

I occasionally use a veggie for a snack. I eat my Proteins for meals and one or two Snacks. Sometime mid morning or mid afternoon I might have 3 -5 mini carrots or a handful of fresh snap peas if I either don't have a protein snack, or am going to have my protein only in my 3 meals that day.

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I'm in Houston so kind of near you and had the sleeve in Dec. Down 61 lbs. Feeling better. Was definitely worth it. I hope the everything is going well for you. Update us when you can!

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

      2. Doughgurl

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!
