3 Months Out Gastric Sleeve Surgery - Is Weight Loss Normal?

Recommended Posts

Im almost three months out. I don't know anyone who has had the gastric sleeve surgery. Everyone that I know either has the band or has gastric bypass. So my question is, what is the weight loss for three months? I asked my Dr. but he said I'm fine but didn't really give me a number. I'm down 39lbs. But what is the average?

Honestly, I don't think you can really talk about an "average" in any meaningful way. We ALL want to know we're "on track", and losing as fast as we should, but there are LOTS of factors that play into your weight loss speed. Men generally lose faster than women. Younger people generally lose faster than older people. Higher BMI people generally lose faster than lower BMI. If you lost some on a pre-op diet, you won't lose as fast as those who are just starting out. And then there's the matter of how much and what you're eating, and how much you're exercising! My best advice is to try not compare your progress to others, just do what you're supposed to, and be patient with your body.

That being said, I started out about where you did (and I'm 5'8"), and I average about 10 lbs / month, but I lost more than 20 on a pre-op diet. I'd agree with your surgeon, I think you're doing great!

I think that is a difficult question to answer. Somebody who started with a BMI of 50 would probably have a larger loss than someone starting at BMI 40. Men vs woman ... pre-existing conditions ... exercise...

There are several topics that do give some #s for people where they are at.

As long as you are doing the right things, you will lose. This isn't a race and I think we could drive ourselves crazy if we think it is. Just keep doing what you are supposed to be doing and it will be GREAT!!

BTW, congratulations on being down 39#s. I think that is great!

As much as we say this isn't a race-and it truly isn't it's hard not to compare with others.

I think 39# in 12 weeks is great. That's an average of over 3# a week. At that rate you would lose over 150# in a year (if you kept at that rate) and who could complain about that.

That being said-I just came from a site where the person had lost 38# their first month and my first thought was "That's not fair"(I only lost 22 my first month-which ended yesterday) I started out with a BMI almost 15 points higher than hers. By all logic and calculations I should lose more than her. But I didn't. Yet I did everything right. Still I lost 46# in 6 weeks!! How great is that! I mean without the surgery I would have probably gained 5 pounds in those 6 weeks!

All we can do is compare ourselves to ourselves. We know when we are following our plan and when we aren't. I really think we need to concentrate less on running the loosing race with each other and focus more on how much healthier we are getting and how we are learning to eat right.

Now if I can just convince myself of that...

Thank you everyone, I really don't want to compare myself to anyone else, as much as I'd like a guideline or something. Like I said, the majority of the WLS people I know had gastric bypass and their weight loss is faster than vertical sleeve, so I guess I just wanted to know if others were like me...I am really excited to lose this weight. I feel the 'real' me is just dying to come out, and I'm on my way. My diabetes is the best its been in 13 years and I'm only 32! I love this site, the people on it. Its definitely been a journey, one that I am glad and thankful to be on. So thanks again, and best wishes for your journeys, health & happiness!

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?
