Eating & Drinking At The Same Time?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone!

I just wanted to throw this out there because I am struggling BIG TIME with eating & drinking at the same time. I don't really drink much, but I find it really difficult to eat my portions of food without rinsing out my mouth after a few bites.

Has anyone else been doing this? I just want to find out how detrimental it is.

Thanks!!

This was posted by Lil Miss ... something or other. I think it explains it pretty well.

I don't do anything 100% ... but I try to do my best ... and keep trying. Yes, sometimes, I do need a drink, but I have to think about why. Is it because I want it to drain through so I can eat more? Is it because what I ate tastes like cat a$$ and I need to rinse?

Well this is something I intend to bring up with my Dr. the next time I see him. I kind of wonder if this no drinking while eating thing is a hold over from RNY. I still have a stomach and a pyloric valve. I have tried not to drink and eat at the same time and am still trying. I do admit to a few sips here and there. The 30 minute rule sometimes goes out the window as I am a school teacher and my plan period is not always a plan period. Meetings of all sorts pop up and ruin that 30 minute no drink before meals. I have to eat when I get a few minutes and it is not always at the same time each day.

I imagine if you asked 10 different doctors you would probably get 10 various answers. Still interested in what mine might say.

This is independent of WLS ... This is an old weight loss trick. My sister has always sworn by it and she battles the bulge less than anybody else in my family. (Except for me, now :smile1:)

I mean, come on ... it makes sense, doesn't it? I know from my own experience if I have taken one bite too many, I can quickly get rid of the overstuffed feeling by having some liquids. But it should not be used so I can stuff more in. That is the point.

I have NEVER been able to do this and STILL drink a lot with each meal. I DO eat only measured portions and don't (usually :blush2: ) eat more than that regardless of drinks or NO drinks.< /p>

With my constant battle with kidney stones I absolutely positively need to drink a LOT and NOT doing so during a meal just isn't practical.

See my ticker for the results I've had WITH drinking at each meal since about 1 month post-op.

Thank you everyone for the responses. It is just extremely hard not to drink something while eating. Especially since I am now eating healthy foods, which I NEVER did before, and am getting used to the way they taste.

At this point, I will continue to have a few swallows of Water with each meal. If I see my weight loss stall or stop, I will consider stopping.

Thanks again!!

@PdxMan: Thank you for describing the taste of pureed chicken for the billionth time. :-)

I think it's one of those YMMV things. I cannot drink anything during eating or immediately afterwards (I am one week out), or I get this terrible feeling like my last bite is lodged just south of my tonsils. I haven't noticed a problem with eating up to mealtime, even though I'm supposed to wait 30 minutes. Sometimes I remember to stop and sometimes I don't.

I think the no-liquids-before-meals thing is to make sure you can fit enough food in your stomach to satisfy you for 4-5 hours, and the rule about no-liquids-at-mealtime or after eating is so you don't flush food out too fast and get hungry.

If you're going to break any of the rules, I figured it's safest to break the pre-meal one.

I'm struggling with this too,but I have discovered that it really helps if I have something cold and moist, like applesauce or yogart, with my meal!

I drink with my meals as well. Hasn't killed me any. But of course, the choice is yours and like you say if you start noticing a stall or weight gain, well drop the drinking. Good luck

I am absolutely not capable of drinking with meals. If I do, it feels like everything just swells up inside of me and is going to explode. This is tough, because I tend to enjoy really hot and spicy foods, and a drink every so often would be nice.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks
