I heard Dr. Alberto Aceves and his staff are the best in wls. Is there anyone out there that has not had a great experience? I've been researching and looking everywhere for months now and can only find excellent comments...Should I go for it?

I'd appreciate your response.

Marian

I know you'll get a thousand responses to your post that say "go for it". I did the same as you and could not find one negative post anywhere (and I'm a great researcher!). His staff are the best. You will feel well taken care of. They respond quickly and personably to any concern you may have. He charges more than some in Mexico, but for me, his level of credentials and the level of confidence inspired by his staff are well worth it.

I had no nausea or vomiting post-op and recovered uneventfully. I am 4 lbs from my goal and only 9 months out from surgery. I appreciated being in a hospital just in case something went wrong and he was the right choice for me.

Thanks, k_, at the long run, I guess it's not about money at all, right?

When you're considering your health, you have to be very careful about how you choose to economize!

Keep searching, and let me know if you ever find anything negative about Dr. Aceves or his staff. You won't - or at least, I never did. Every single person I dealt with went above and beyond and if I had extra money just laying around I'd be sending both my mother and sister to visit Dr. Aceves for sleeves of their own.

He is THE best surgeon you could choose, in my opinion. Not just the best Mexican surgeon - one of the best, period. Before I went with him I researched three other stateside doctors and not only were his stats the best, there was nobody disappointed with him. I also thought I got a lot more for my money with him - 3 nights in the hospital for less than I'd pay to do it stateside. I felt safer and I was definitely taken care of - and of course, I got the results I wanted!

I didn't use him but can say that as long as you carefully research your doctor do NOT be scared about going to Mexico for surgery. I used Dr Ortiz and was beyond pleased. I would go back again without hesitation.

For me it wasn't about the money. Yes, I was self pay. But I have two small children and I HAD to come home and in good health for them. Dr Aceves is truly the best. You won't find bad reviews of him. People think because he charges less that you are settling for surgery in Mexico but truth be told I wouldn't send my family to anyone else regardless of where he practiced. If he were here in the states he would blow these US doctors up.

So true. I could've gotten this surgery here in town for appx. 2.5x the price, but the Dr. would've only done about 2 dozen VSGs. And then I'd probably end up having a resident do the actual operation, anyway, with the surgeon just standing by.

And don't forget that part of the reason that Dr. Aceves (and other Drs in Mexico) are cheaper is because their overhead is way lower - they pay less in malpractice insurance, rent, OR fees, and staff salaries, so part of the savings are passed on to you, the patient.

I also chose Dr. Aceves for all of the reasons stated above. I am going there by myself, and I, too will feel better being in a hospital for 3 nights in case anything goes wrong. I can not afford to take off any time from work beyond what I have planned, so I am hoping my first few days after surgery are uneventful. From what I have read, it seems that Dr. Aceves has the least amount of complications, including nausea and things that aren't actual surgical complications.

My surgery is scheduled for October 11th. I will be arriving there the 10th (Wednesday), and flying home on Monday the 15th (because the flight was cheaper than on Sunday the 14th). Let us know what you decide!

Maybe we will cross paths the morning of the 11th... doubtful but maybe..... :( I'm getting just a bit nervous.

Have you heard anything about them giving you a "spinal infusion" or a spinal block before the surgery starts (while you are sedated but still awake)? I found that out today and didn't know it before. It is like (I assume) the same thing given to block the pain of childbirth. (I've never had children so "I don't know nothin' about birthin' no babies"!!!!!) But it supposedly blocks the pain for 24 hours and makes you numb from the waist down. I did a search on this site for that term and found it in a few places, but only rarely. You can refuse it if you don't want it. What do you think you will do? Did you know about it?

I had Dr Aceves and they did the spinal block after I was under anesthesia. Last thing I remember was talking to the anesthesiologist about living in Vegas and poof! I was in recovery. The staff was so comforting and friendly. The thing about the epidural is that is blocks the pain for the first 24 hours. I honestly never had any pain post-op. I did get nauseous the first two nights and I was glad to be in the hospital so they could put the meds in my iv and then I felt better. Even when I was so sick I was dry-heaving in a trash can the night nurse sat right beside me and patted my back until it passed. I don't blame the staff for the nausea, things happen. I'm 3 weeks out and still have nausea problems occasionally so I know it's my body, nothing to do with the surgery.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?
