11 days out and I can eat the whole thing

Recommended Posts

Last night I was able to finish the entire 10 3/4 oz size of creamy chicken soup.WTH! I can drink and drink and drink as well. I have not thrown up or anything. I am only 11 days out!! I can't tolerate my Protein Drinks either. They make me gag. Is this common?

I had the same thing. I could drink way more than I should have been able to. However, drinking is very different from taking in actual food! The fluids go through quickly. I am a month out and still cant do Protein Shakes. Loved them before surgery and for first week post op. Now they gross me out. Hang in there it will get better!

Just because you CAN drink that much, doesn't mean you should. You may not be able to feel your full mark yet because of nerves cut in surgery. You also may not have as much swelling which is good. Just take things slowly and measure your food out. All will be good once you are able to eat dense Protein. You'll feel restriction then

Thanks! I feel better knowing I'm not the only one. I spent a small fortune testing out Protein Shakes before surgery and now I can't even stand the smell. I start pureed foods on Monday, so I hope that makes a difference :)

Thanks Fern! I do measure my meals but seem to be able to drink Water like no tomorrow. Not that I'm complaining, it just seems everyone has a hard time getting enough Water and I (thankfully) don't. I was a little worried.

I'm curious- how long did you take to eat/drink the Soup? I can take in a lot of liquids/solids if I do so over an extended period of time.

The same thing happened to me. Drinking is soooo different from eating. The liquid goes through your new smaller stomach much faster and begins to empty out more quickly so I wouldn't be too alarmed. although you should still go very slowly. The Protein drinks were horrible for me the first month or so. I couldn't stand the smell, taste, texture yuck. Now, it is a different story. The taste is fine, the texture and smell are too. Your taste buds continually change, so if you have any on hand, don't get rid of them just yet. It might change for you too. I am 9 weeks out and not having any difficulty with the Protein Drinks at the moment. However, Proti 15 makes a lemonade that got me through the stage when I couldn't drink the sweeter ones.

Good luck

It took about 20 minutes. :(

Thanks Phillygirl - I was about to throw them out. Those containers are HUGE and I would love to have my cabinet space back, lol.

I was in this same boat. I only received one meal at the hospital and it was 6 ozs of chicken broth. After I ate half of it with no restrictions I had to make myself put the bowl down. I chalked me feeling no restrictions and not feeling any pain after eating to the morphine. Before being discharged I ate the remainder of the Soup and the same thing... no pain and not feeling full or restricted.

In the days that followed I never had a problem getting down liquids or Protein. Yesterday, post-op days 15, I started my mushy phase and that's the very first time I ever felt full. I ate a few bites of chicken and it took me over the edge like I had eaten Thanksgiving dinner. So your full button/factor will certainly kick in. For a while there I thought maybe I did something wrong like drink too much liquid thereby stretching out my new stomach but of course that wasn't the case. liquids do go thgouth you much quicker. And sometimes you'll probably find yourself getting hungier sooner because of it. As time goes by the restriction(s) comes and you will feel full and you won't be able to comsume as much as you did right after surgery.

Finally, at 16 days post-op I'm not getting as hungry as I did immediately after surgery, my full factor sensor definitely works, and things are moving right along. I can still drink which isn't a bad thing, I just try not to consume more that 8 ozs of liquid an hour per my doctor's instruction.

All the best to you and please keep me posted on your progress.

Niki

When I was in the hospital, I ate all my Jello and 2 sf ice pops on day 3. No problem, felt no restriction at all. Those are considered liquids though and since day 2 I have never had a problem with Water and like liquids. Protein shakes were a different story, when I got home it would take me 2 hours to drink an 11oz shake. By two weeks I was drinking them in an hour, by 3 weeks 1/2 hour after that maybe 15 minutes. I am 6 months out now and I eat like a "normal" person now.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
