you're so funny! (i'd never have the nerve to swim anywhere but in the privacy of my own pool. being fat has made me lose out on so much!)

my brother in law jokingly called me a sea cow once (this was in my thin days. he wouldn't be so callous now or i'd beat the ever lovin' tar out of him!). i didn't know what that was and he said a manatee. now whenever i look at myself in underwear, that's what i think of!!! oh well. thank goodness i have friends to talk to about it! :blah:

Hi Gang

I was googling how your body gets rid of fat you burn (reason to drink more water) and came across this website.

Thought some of you might be interested - I liked the part of why it's better to lose a 1 or 2 a week and not 3 or 5 a week.

I've been to Rocky Point. It's fun. It's better to go in the spring when the Water is warmer. I would imagine it's much more built up by now. I was there a long time ago.

I've been really tired and haven't exercised since Sunday. I need to get my rear in gear tomorrow. It's hard for me to get motivated lately on the days that I have to work. I hope when now that I'm off work the rest of the week, the exercise will make the scale move.

That's the only thing that does it for me. I have the laziest metabolism ever and unless I exercise, it just gets slower and slower w/out me ever losing anything. It's so frustrating. But that's what's nice about this group, we all pretty much have the same or similar problems. :faint:

Speaking of exercise, have any of you had experience with Curves? I've heard some good things about it and am thinking maybe that is what I need. I checked out their website and it talks about a 6-week weight loss program. what is that? Do you do that along with the exercise or is it a separate program? I may have to go check it out. We're staying with our daughter right now while our house is being finished and I saw a Curves down the street so I thought maybe now would be a good time to try it out. our house will be done Oct 12 so I could do the 6-week program. Anxious to hear...

I checked out their website and it talks about a 6-week weight loss program. what is that? Do you do that along with the exercise or is it a separate program? I may have to go check it out. We're staying with our daughter right now while our house is being finished and I saw a Curves down the street so I thought maybe now would be a good time to try it out. our house will be done Oct 12 so I could do the 6-week program. Anxious to hear...

I do Curves, well, I did before the surgery...I work at a college and during the summer we only take 1/2 hr lunches, so I've been negligent. However, school just started back so probably in the next couple of weeks, I'll start back to Curves.

The 6 week program is something separate. I haven't done that, but they go over eating plans, etc. I think. The exercise program is great though. They have several machines (can't remember exactly how many) and you do 2 circuits of those. You stay on each machine 20 secs (again, rusty mind, but I think that's right). It sounds like a ridiculously short amount of time, but staying on them that amount of time, doing 2 circuits on the machines (resistance), works out to 20 mins (you do the math! ;)). Oh and they encourage you to go 3 times a week.

There's a changing room there, but I usually just change before I go so I can start right away. The women that run it are just oh so nice. Both of the ones I've met lost 60-100+ pounds and are so encouraging. The women clients are usually in their 40's to 60's. There are no guys!

What else can I tell you? I would say definitely visit and see what you think. The first time you go they give you a little training. After that, they're there and will coach you if they see you doing something wrong or if you ask for help. There's usually fun music playing and a voice in the background telling you when to change stations. People can chit chat as they go.

Hope this helps. I will say that I always feel better after I work out and I was definitely losing inches before I stopped for my surgery.

Thanks SO much, Crabcake. I'll go tomorrow and consider the costs. I'm assuming they have different plans for different costs and lengths of time (a month or a year, for example). I think I'm looking for a "trial membership" if they have such a thing. Anyway, thanks so much for your quick response. I need something other than walking every day. I got my 7th fill today and am at 3.1 in my 4 cc band so I'm energized and optimistic that the band will start helping me out with some restriction and subsequent results. Here's hoping!

Hi all. My name is Nancy and I will be banded onm Sept. 5th in Mexico. Self pay- I am wondering if I can join your group. I'm definitely over 50 - logging in at 65 makes me the oldest here that I have seen so far. Don't know if I like that honor. ;) Like everyone I have lots of questions and worries but I have to do this. I want to lose between 120 and 130 lbs. Not only do I have age, BMI of 47 going on ...I had previous weight loss surgery in 1972. I lost all my weight but the proceedure I had was very dangerous (they don't do it anymore) and I had to have surgery in 1986 to reverse it. I gradually have gained all my weight back and more.:help:

I've been considering doing this for about 4 years but kept saying no because of Insurance isssues. But in Dec. we are going to Disney World with my grandaughters and I want to have energy enough to enjoy the trip. Two weeks ago I decided to do it and because it is Mexico I have 2 weeks to go. I am having it done by Dr. Ortiz. They require that I lose 15 lbs before the surgery and as of this morning I have lost 13. Oh good only 2 more to go - what can I eat..... NOT I have got to change all that OLD thinking.

Well thats me - except that I live in Southern OR :rain:just a few miles from the CA border and I hope to hear from anyone who is local, over 60 or just plain anybody.

I went to Curves for 3 years. I felt much, much better and finally got my arse off the couch. It helped a lot with not being so depressed and disconnected to other people after a move to another state.

The good things about Curves are that everything is low-impact, and it is easier and more interesting than most work out places where you just do everything on your own. You're in a big circle and it's pretty easy to start talking to the other women and everyone is usually in a good mood because they are getting some exercise.

I wound up getting tendonitis which caused me to be immobile for a while. By the time the tendonitis was better (6 months!) my knees were shot. Don't ask me why the arthritic knees happened so quickly, but I have talked to other people who have had similar experiences. I wound up getting the band because I was desperate for relief!!

I recommend Curves unless you are used to doing really strenuous exercises. If you are (like a friend of mine) it will seem way too easy for you. What I found after going to Curves for a couple of weeks, is that you will up your activity and intensity gradually. What seems so easy in the beginning can actually become much more difficult as you go along. Which is, of course, a good thing. Unless you damage something, that is.

I didn't like curves. I hated the music they played, and the fact that you can't go at your own speed. You have to change machines when they tell you to.

I much prefer my gym, but it is a bit more expensive. There is so much more variety there, too. A lot of people really do like curves though. I was just glad that I was able to get out of the contract that they made me sign.

I've done Curves and enjoyed it a lot. I quit because it was too far away and by the time my daycare kids left there was too much rushing to get there in time. The price of gas didn't help either. The weight loss program is a separate program through Curves and cost extra but I'v known lots of people who lost a lot on it. If there's one close to you I'd give it a try. They do require a year contract.

:welcome: Nancy aka Mistymoon... This is a great group and you will learn alot on this thread for us over 50 and on this site period.

Yes - you gotta change that too Old way of thinking. You are never too old to get heathly... And as to your age - it's just a number - we all are still young in our minds eye and none of us keep track of the age - we are just here to share our expericences (and we all have diff one than the younger ones) I hear Dr Ortiz is very good and come highly recommended by many - I have seen his name here on this board and I don't remember one bad thing being said about him

I have a lot more to lose than you, but also 5 ft tall with BD in Nov, but I'll be 64 this birthday. You are the full-timer, right? Are you taking the RV to MX when you have your surgery?

You are in SF area now? Our son is in the Navy, currently living at Moffett Field in Mountain View. We usually spend a week or so there on our way south (and back north.) We recently relocated from OK to WA. Its been a cold, rainy summer here and I am SO ready to be back in Indiogirl's "neighborhood"!!

Denise- I totally agree about the music at Curves!! Fortunately I found one that did their own thing with the music. It was a younger crowd and they didn't put up with all those oldies and religious music. It was a huge improvement over the first Curves I joined! There was one particularly grating song, something like MY GOD IS AN AWESOME GOD. Oh puleeze...

      I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

      Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

      On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
      Soooo I am coming to a realization
      of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

        I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

        Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

        Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

        I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

        I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

        BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
