How is weight loss for people over 50?

I am going in for an unfill. I have been pbing in my sleep ever since I go the fill on Friday. It's been a miserable weekend. It's really awful to be sound asleep and have it come up and you feel like you're drowning.

Denise - Sorry to hear you are having such a tough time - maybe the unfill will get you to your sweetspot -...

I got a fill last Monday. These things are so strange sometimes! With my previous fills, it would take about 2 weeks for me to actually notice it. Not so with the last one. I noticed it right away and am still feeling marvelously restricted!

I asked the nurse whether she took all of it out and then put the rest in. She said no, she just made sure it 'splashed back' (her words) so she would know she was actually in the port. Interesting, no?

Denise, I hope you got at least a tinsy unfill. I had to have .25 cc's taken out once and that little bit made a huge difference!

Hope you are all doing well.

p.s., I've noticed the strangest thing on the forum (so if there's a moderator reading this, I'd love an answer!). I'm subscribed to this forum and I'll get notices for a while that someone has added a new message, then all of a sudden, I'll stop getting those messages. It seems that once I visit the site again, it starts sending the messages again. So what's with that? Anyone else experienced this?

Yep, me too, Crabcake. I have the same technical experiences with this forum as you do.

And Denise822, you must get a defill ASAP. You are in deep waters right now. It sounds like you are suffering from something in the nature of an acid reflux thingy. This is very, very bad. I was good for 8 months, then got an overfill, and now I am very messed up with acid reflux problems - for the first time in my life!!! - which are taking forever to calm down. I am now defilled but really miss having my band filled and reminding me not to overeat. My G.I. tract still isn't back to normal and I am not going to risk a fill until I feel normal.

Please get a defill now. Do not end up with my problems; they really are a pain in the anatomy, grrl.

Thanks Green, it's good to not be the only one!

As for the acid reflux, I had that prior to the band and I whole heartedly agree, it's NOT good! I would wake up in some serious pain, get up, go to the couch, toss and turn. Think what can I do, get up, try that, go back to the couch...this would go on all night and always with the PAIN! (I'm a big baby when it comes to pain...thus, no children! :paranoid)

Fortunately for me, a little purple pill fixed it all. I hope you're able to get the same help. But you're right not to get a refill until you're feeling better. Sometimes (usually when I'm pb'ing) I think we take the band too much for granted.

Hang tough all.

You will all be happy to hear that I am back from my defill. I am right back to where I started from . I went in to go from 2.5 to 2.75, then somehow all my fill disappeared. He was afraid I had a leak, so he put 3.0 in there, which turned out to be way too much for me. Today he took out the 3.0, so I don't have a leak. He left 2.5 in there, so I am right back where I started, when I couldn't lose weight. But, I did lose 6 lbs in the 3 days I was on liquids only. But it still wasn't worth all the pain that 3.0 caused me.

Makes me want to stay on liquids for a few weeks though

Why didn't he give you the 2.75? Is he just trying to give your stomach a rest?

I never know why they do what they do, or why my body reacts as it does. The first fill I had was too much and I had to have some taken out, but since then, I've been ok.

Glad you're feeling better. Did he say when you could go back for another fill?

Crabcake, the emails I get from LBT that notify me of a new message say:

There may also be other replies, but you will not receive any more notifications until you visit the forum again.

I've found that if I don't go into the site and read the new message, then I don't get any more notifications. It's good because sometimes I can't check in for awhile and I'd hate my inbox to be so jammed with every message that is posted. FYI. I hope that answers your question.

It is my official first day on mushies. I am a little worried that I over did it for dinner. This is what I ate today:

Breakfast---oatmeal, 1 cup coffee

lunch---tuna

dinner--salmon pattie and half baked potato.

I am worried I over ate at dinner. I had dinner at 6 p.m. I was very full. It is 10:30 p.m. and still full. Should I be feeling like this, or is it because I overate at dinner. :angry

I wouldn't worry about it too much. Just try to pay attention when you eat

if you hick up or feel tight like it's not going down right. It's not going to

matter right now until you get a fill. When you do, you shouldn't be able

to eat that much. food will get stuck and back up into your esophagus.

I don't have a clue. I asked him to let me go back to 2.75 which was what

I was supposed to get in the first place, and he said that normally

he would have completely unfilled someone with that bad of reflux.

I have an appointment in about 4 weeks which was 6 weeks from when

I originally got a fill that was supposed to be the 2.75.

I'll see how I am doing by then.

Haha I'm a real sissy, too, when it comes to pain, and I don't have any kids, either. I used to tell people that I would have be on morphine from the point of childbirth until they were, like, 20 or something.... :D

My doc has got me taking Losec and I am defilled until everything calms down. I feel pretty good but I do have the creepy little cough and my voice is hoarse. Ugh! :tired

Yep, I've noticed the same thing. Maybe it's a way to get back to the board. I do find, that when I go check in at the site, I find more interesting messages.

I too notice the same thing when I have a little more than what I usually eat. Especially if it's potatoes. I just started pureed on Friday, so am still learning what makes me feel ok and what doesn't. My doctor told me that there could still be swelling in the pouch and it does take time for that to go down. Also, you do want to be careful not to overeat at this time so as not to make the band slip. I've found, if I eat too much, I have a stomach ache for about 2 hours.

Keep in mind, this is all a learning experience right now. Follow your guidelines for food and Fluid intake.

Productive burp - when your last bite comes back up when you burp- it's really not like throwing up - but a little up chuck in your burp and mine wasn't really vounltary - i knew i had over eaten and had the golf ball in the chest with a tad of slime and all of a sudden it came right out - with some slime... didn't hurt and wasn't the same feeling as throwing up - i think for everyone it's a tad different

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
