Sip, Sip, Sip ... forever???

Recommended Posts

Hello,

Everything I've read says that after surgery I'll have to sip, sip, sip ...

Will I only have to sip like that in the beginning or will that be the way I drink from then on? If I have to sip for the rest of my life I know I'll get used to it but I was just curious.

Thanks,

Lisa

ohhh I want this question answered too!! Sipping sucks so hot out! Will we be able to drink the ounce cup all at once, or half an ounce? Or even be able to drink more often?

Well, I'm not sure what you are supposed to do, but I am able to drink pretty much like I did before surgery. I had to sip for the first weeks after surgery & I still have to keep Water by me at all times so that I remember to drink frequently to get in enough Water, but when I'm at the gym & need water, I am able to take pretty big gulps. Drinking water doesn't feel much different to me than it did before I had surgery.

I can "gulp" Water now, although my gulps aren't quite as big as they were before surgery but pretty close. I feel that I can drink normally now...I can down an 11 oz Protein Shake in about 5 minutes. I have also found that I can eat more like I could before surgery meaning I don't have to chew every bite of food a billion times. I still do feel some discomfort if I push it though. But it all feels very normal to me now. Hope this gives you hope :)

Nah.. I'm 7 weeks out and I can take a big ol' drink :) If you take in TOO much then it just feels heavy and sort of stuck. I can eat almost anything without issue and drinking is just fine. The restriction is a dreamy thing! lol

I can drink pretty much normally too, 2 months out. Living in Las Vegas in the summer if you can't drink you are in big trouble. I know some people here say they drink soda and beer, but I am going to avoid them alltogether, although I do have to say I miss my Diet Mtn Dew more than anything else!

I was able to drink from a straw right away, and guzzle eventually :)

I adjusted my way of drinking early on. I was doing a sip sip suck thing like letting it flow down my throat in a smoothish way....if that makes sense. Now, at 8 weeks out, i'm drinking pretty darn fast and it feels like i never had the surgery, however I did try to drink right after eating...wow I would NOT recommend that EVER. Holy! I threw up like the girl from the exocist....

The sipping will go away and you can resume normal drinking. As a previous big gulper I would ask that we all really think about that prospect. Most sleeves are designed to be about 4oz in capasity. Really think it's a good idea to try and flood as much liquid into that space in as little time as possible? Ever see a Water balloon? I don't think pushing our stomachs to their limits and the repeating will yeild favorable results. If one wanted to stretch their stomach back out, what would be a recommend way to do it? I seem to think, fill with water, stretch to limits, empty and repeat would be pretty darn effective.

If stomach is relatively empty, Water will pass relatively quickly and pobably will not cause expansion of the stomach which is more likely caused by overeating as the digestive track has to break down the solids.

oh no, I'm out now 22 months and gulp my liquids like a champ. Mind you it's only 1/2 a glass at a time and then your sleeve will definately let you know your over doing it. . but now i can drink things like no ones business. . .so for now it's sip, after a while you'll be back to normal. . . good luck

It's a beginning thing. Once your swelling goes down, you can hold more Water in your tummy. It's still not a lot but you can gulp down three or four swallows at a time.

Good point. From what I've found and this is in reference to a normal stomach, it takes between 6-8 hours for the contents to move into the small intestines. If we can evaluate that time purely on a proportional reduction in capasity for our new sleeve that would mean the food is still in there for 1-2 hours. So as long as one is drinking when they are supposed to be, 45-60 minutes after eating, maybe there wouldn't be a concern with Fluid pressure expanding the stomach.....where's my physiology professor when I need him? :)

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.
