Question for Post Op Sleevers!

I was just curious, if you could've done anything differently in terms of preparing for the VSG what would you have done?

Maybe get more exercise so you're more used to it pre-op?

Maybe started your post op Vitamins early?

Maybe started to get used to sipping Water rather than gulping?

I'm just guessing.

I am somewhat the exception in this case as I had absolutely no problems from day one so I can not think of anything I would do differently but I will say I would have tried to find out more about Protein rich foods since I am still haveing a hard time working all my Protein into my diet. I have found I can't tolerate the protein powders as they literally make me feel sick to my stomache It may be mind over matter but everytime I try to drink one I end up with a stomache ache. Had the RNY? No I would have never considered it but the acid reflux after surgery has thrown me for a loop and I understand that isn't an issue with bypass.

Believed everyone when they said you might not like the Protein powder afterwards.

I would have really practiced pacing myself with fluids and paid attention to the time it took to drink 4 bottles of Water when sipping. I drank alot of stuff from a straw and I think that makes you drink faster - I am still struggling with my fluids.

Took 6 weeks off instead of 4.

Can't say that I would have. I have the best team of dr., nut and case mgr. They really prepared me for what was going to happen and gave me all of the tools and information for success 6 months in advance. I started day after my orientation with most of my new habits.

That is what blows my mind on this site, people are saying that they don't know what to eat and how much to eat. WHO IS THEIR DR.???? It is crazy to me to think that they would not be educated on how to eat after such a MAJOR surgery! :mellow:

@ Kelly, I had my seminar earlier this week and received a huge binder of info of which I'm about 1/2 way through reading it. Unfortunately (or fortunately I guess) it's all about the pre-op diet and then what to expect the day of and then from there on out. Lots of detail but I guess I just wonder what I can do now to ensure things go as smoothly as they can - not sure how much I can affect the recovery but just curious.

I appreciate all of the responses, this is GREAT! Thank you!

I was taking Vitamins and other supplements before surgery but I wish I had started taking them like a sleeved person would before surgery....2 calcuim citrate chews first thing in the morning....a couple of hours later, my chewable Multivitamin and my chewable Vitamin C....then around 4 p.m., another 2 Calcium citrate chews......then right before bed, another chewable Multivitamin and my acid reducer.

When I had surgery, I was so out of energy and between taking all the pain medication and nausea medication, it's hard to remember what to take and when.

Also, I would have started sipping my Water every couple of minutes...that was so hard to get used to after surgery. And struggled to stay hydrated.

And definitely don't over buy the Protein powder. Buy what you need for pre op and maybe just a little bit extra for right after surgery. My taste buds changed and even now at almost 3 months out, I almost gag when I have to drink one.....it even makes me sick to smell it. Before surgery, I thought it tasted pretty good and looked forward to it.

I spent a year doing research - so I knew what to expect. And I knew a lot about what food to eat afterwards. But, I wish I would have had all my clothes organized by size - so as I shrank rapidly - I would know what I had and have them at hand. I would also have thought through what I might need to suplement for the gaps in my wardrobe.

I have had a relatively easy six months. I found Protein drinks I could tolerate and enjoy early on. I only use them now for convenience occasionally.

I wish I practiced sipping Water beforehand. I "knew" I had to sip and wouldn't be able to chug a bottle of Water anymore, but I guess I didn't really realize it until it happened. I'm having a hard time reaching my liquids level, especially since I'm eating (soft foods) now. I'm probably at risk for dehydration :/

I also wish I didn't order a 3lb tub of vanilla Protein powder off the internet, thinking "How can you mess up vanilla? ". It tastes like thick milk and makes me gag. It's important to be prepared before surgery, but get small samples to try after you have your sleeve. Then make the big purchases. Your taste buds really do change.

I wish I would have had the surgery when I was in my 30's instead of all the stupid yoyo diets.......finally had it at 45!!!!!!!!!!Yea Me! :)

The only thing I would have done differently would be to exercise more. I'm only two weeks out but I feel really weak and I am guessing that if I had stronger muscles going into surgery I might feel a little better, but that's just a guess.

The things that really helped me most were to do TONS of research on this site so that I knew exactly what to expect at each stage, from the possibility of tastes changing, to the emotional stuff, to the soreness, and the pains to watch out for. It's a lot to go through in a short amount of time and it helps to know that what you're experiencing is normal. The other thing I'm glad I did was to get small bowls. I know what 4oz of liquid looks like in my bowl and it helps to know that I'm eating enough and not eating too much.

As for the Protein stuff, only buy samples and different ready to drink shakes. It's important to have some stuff at home to use after surgery, but you don't want to buy a big tub of anything until you're sure you like it post-op. There are tons of recipes on here and I wish I had tried more of them out beforehand so that I really understood that you don't have to just mix your powder with Water or milk.

I did two weeks liquid diet lost 20 pounds & starting walking. I have lost a total of 60 pounds. I was sleeved July 26th.

I was borderline qualifying and was told not to lose weight before surgery. Thus, I gained 20 more pounds in 3 months! Stupid, wish I hadn't done that!

I agree that the acid reflux threw me for a loop too. I'd never experienced it before and thought it was the same as indigestion. It way isn't. I think I just wish I'd have understood how bad true acid reflux is so that I would have been making an informed decision. And I think that when you tell your surgeon you've never experienced it, he should clue you in that it's not the same as simple indigestion. For someone who already experiences bad acid reflux it really could be a decison factor in going a different way.

Otherwise, I would never have bought the specialized things you read about so many people buying in the "what will I need" threads. The "need" is a very brief window of time and I could have done just fine without the things I did buy.

Ah, this is one of the best things I learned here. Unflavored does not mean tasteless. My unflavored actually has a very strong taste and needs to be masked pretty well to be used.

      I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

      Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

        I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

        Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation.       Soooo I am coming to a realization
      of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

        I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

        Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

        Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

        I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

        I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

        BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
