Tired of this thing called 'THE STALL'

Recommended Posts

Hey ya'll,

I was sleeved on August 1, 2011 and I lost 21 lbs during weeks 1&2. The reason why I'm frustrated is because I have been in a stall for exactly 3 weeks. Now, I know that a lot of ppl have gone thru this 3 week stall but, I haven't losed an inch for 3 weeks either. In fact I gained 5 lbs this past week, and I don't know WHAT IS GOING ON! After being stalled for 2 weeks my surgeon told me that I needed to up my fluids because I was only getting in about 30oz a day, so I increased my Water and have been drinking btn 64-80oz a day, and as a result I gained 5lbs. I'm getting in 64-90 oz of fluids, eating 4 times a day, walking 3 times a day (15 min. each as instructed) and still nothing. I have read these threads where they tell ppl ' Oh don't worry, even though your not losing weight you are definitely losing inches' Well not for me, and I feel very very discouraged. I have over 100 lbs to lose and I don't think that I will lose even 1/4 of that. HELP, because I don't know what I'm doing wrong.

P.S: I know there are a lot of threads about these dreadful stalls but I needed to vent and get some advice, HOPE YOU'RE NOT ANNOYED.

What are you eating? Are you tracking your food? The weight gain might be from upping your Water and you may lose that very quickly.

If your diet is carb-heavy, you might try upping your Protein and reducing your carbs. I would recommend tracking everything that goes into your mouth so you can see exactly how many calories you're eating (and what the mix of Protein, carbs and fat is).

Good luck, I'm sure it's frustrating!

You will be fine. Like you said a lot of people go through the stalls. The gain is from Water weight because think about it you are not consuming enough calories to actually gain that much weight. In order to gain a pound you have to have something like 3500 calories. :) Your new stomach couldn't handle 3500 calories. Hang tough, you will get through this. It just takes time.

I'm so sorry your going through the exact same thing as me.. surgery august 2nd and 13 pounds gone till 7 days after surgery, on august 10th I stalled and as of today, still no weight loss. I have heard everyone say it all..my nut says my Protein, Water, carbs are all perfect but no weight loss and some measurements are even bigger then before....the only hope I can offer, is I'm here with you...I know exactly what you feel and I can hope for us both. I'm sorry again and hope we both loose soon!

I am in the same boat! It could be our bodies adjusting to the new way we are eating. I am hoping our bodies adjust soon and we start losing. I think since so many of us are going through it, it has to be normal. I am hoping! LOL! Good luck!!!!

My weight loss was ridiculously fast at first- I was losing 2 lbs a day for the first 10 days. And then it came to a halt and slowed wayyyy down. It drops a little bit here and there, but anywhere close to my original high rate.

It's normal for your weight to fluctuate. It can be anything from hormones to Water retention to your body just being frustrating (I know I've felt that way). You didn't really gain the weight, so don't worry! So early in the game, it's practically impossible for us to gain weight.

Over 100 lbs to lose can seem like a daunting task. I have 80 lbs to lose and it feels unreachable at times. We have the sleeve to help us, and it will help us.

I'm only 3 weeks post-op, so I might not be the best source of information. If you want a companion in the same boat as you, feel free to PM me or add me as a friend.

Thank you so much you guys for giving me your words of encouragement and feedback. I read what ppl say about the stall, but it's different when the advice is directed towards you. I feel so much better .

I usually eat tuna, eggs with cheese, or refried Beans, but I don't track my food. So I am taking your advice Indymom and I signed up with myfitnesspal, and it seems like a create helpful app.

I will keep you all posted .

I was sleeved August 2nd and in the exact same boat. It sucks. I gained this week, but got my TOM 2 days ago, so I'm hoping that was why and it'll come back off very soon. Keep plugging along. IT will come off because it has to - it's simple science, but I get your frustration. I'm on that bench with you.

I promise it will start again! I was stalled for two weeks. Scared the mess out of me thinking I had spent all of this money for nothing. But I stepped on the scale and guess what.... the 3 lbs I gained and 2 more were gone this morning (I didn't weigh all weekend). I also went another pant size down. IT WILL HAPPEN :D.....JUST NOT OVERNIGHT!

Good Luck Y'all!

Hey Ya'll

So yesterday I weighed myself and lost the 5 lbs that I gained, but I still consider myself still in a stall because I'm right back to where I was when I started stalling :-(. It will be 4 weeks on Monday and I'm a little worried because I have read about 3 week stalls not 4 weeks. I'm not upset like I was before but I will say that I'm a little hopeful as well.

When you hear about the 3rd week stall, what that means is it STARTS around the 3rd week post op. The 3rd week stall on average lasts from 3 weeks long, and I've even heard some lasting 5 weeks long. So no worries, what you're going through is completely normal.

You just have to hang in there and wait for it to pass, unfortunately. Like Julie76 mentioned, it will happen... just not overnight.

I've endured all kinds of stalls being a year out, but time goes by and the pounds and inches continue to drop. Keep your spirits up and stay positive! I know it's really hard during times like this, but know that someday you will be right here where I'm standing. You'll be breaking advice at goal while the newbs are worried about their 3rd week stall. ;)

Hey Ruthie, GREAT step in tracking your food - it is so benificial for you to actually see how many calories, carbs & protiens you are getting... There are many supportive, knowledgeable people on this forum, good for you in listening and taking advise. You will do great, stay focus and stay positive!!!:D

Never feel that we will be annoyed with a vent. . .

Honey, I was on a stall for 7 months. . . want to talk about being annoyed??? But then after a while it moved again, I lost only 3 lbs and no more. . i did pass my doctors goal but never got to my own. . . maybe mine was a little too much to expect. I'm very happy at my weight right now, and i actually like myself a whole lot better!!!

I won't tell you "it'll get better" or "don't worry about it" cause i know it's you. . . we all want things good for US. . .but what i will tell you is this BE PATIENT. . . and that is harder then any weight loss efforts. . . good luck

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!
